Default brake failure - intermittent?

Started the car today in the driveway and noticed that while the brake pedal was firm, I had no grip. My driveway has a slight hill to it and my car would roll. I pumped a few times and it go no better. Jumped in the wifers car to run an errand and when I came back an hour later the brakes seem to work fine.
This has me concerned a bit as you can imagine. I have plenty of fluid and pads have plenty of meat.
Could this be a master cylinder issue? If so, how do I check?
I have also heard about a slave cylinder but do not know much about this component either.
Any info appreciated.

Dead bomb or dead power steering pump/fluid leak. No (BRAKE) light?
