PSA: If you're not sure of the source of bad engine noises, assume the worst...
My 95.5 S6 Avant has had a variety of noises from the engine compartment since I got it. I knew the PS pump was bad, and I was told that the idler was also, so I wrote off the noises to those two culprits.
Well, I finally got around to replacing both, and the noise wasn't much better. Once I finally dug into it, the water pump ended up being the real culprit, and it was entirely too close to catastrophic failure for comfort by the time I realized this- I've never seen one with that much play before.
So, if you've got a noise, I'd highly recommend pulling the serpentine belt at least temporarily to help localize the source. If the noise doesn't go away, get your WP replaced ASAP before something really expen$$ive happens.
