Default What are some symptoms of problems with the cats?

lately, I've been getting a strange smell after driving the car. It is more pronounced after driving the car hard? I can't seem to find exactly where this is coming from. I read that overfilling the fuel tank (which I did to the extreme not long ago) could damage the cats. Do I even need them? We don't have emissions testing where I live. I'd like to have them for the sake of the environment, but If I reamed them out, would it affect the running of the car?

Default A source of a "bad smell" could also be trans oil dripping from seal on the

output shaft of the transmission... it sits above the exhaust... will drip on to it and then cause a stench when you run hard. After 200 miles of highway driving there would be visible smoke coming from the bottom of my car until I got it fixed.

If it smells kinda like a fart, it's unburnt fuel making it to the cats. I'm guessing you have a slight miss at some point, so tiny you barley noticeable, but it sends unburnt fuel into the cats.

It's not a gas smell or unburned gas. No fart or sulphur. It doesn't really have a petroleum smell. That is why I am a little confused. I'll look into the leaky seal thing though...
