View Full Version : Could it be a wheel bearing??
larsenracing 05-17-2009, 06:28 PM Alright I just got this A6 C6 Quattro. Has 47K on it. There is a noise seems to be in the rear its a little hum. It sounds to me like a wheel bearing. It changed pitch with RPM change speeding up or slowing down. It also gets louder when turning one way and quieter when turning the other?
Or is this just completely normal on the A6? My Dads 05 A4 and my moms 03 TT do not have this noise?
Blue44 05-17-2009, 06:31 PM Usually a tell tale sign of a wheel bearing is lots of noise while turning one way and very little noise while turning the other. I would guess it's a wheel bearing.
larsenracing 05-17-2009, 06:41 PM That's what my last experiences were with wheel bearings going out. I guess its a good think I have 2,500 or so miles of factory warranty left so I don't have to pay the deductible on the CPO. I gatta run it back there to get the steering wheel straightened out cuz they put new tires on it and did an alignment but didn't set the wheel straight when they did it. What kind of Audi shop forgets that, LOL J/K.

2nd -- i just had one of mine replaced at 44.5K -- tell tale sign was the hum... i though it was tire rubbing but it did it with stock wheels as well. dealer confirmed and replaced under warranty.
Blue44 05-17-2009, 06:50 PM If you want.. I have done probably more than a hundred alignments on Audi A6s.. There was a recall in the late 90s for tie rod ends on some of them... Ask your service to provide you with a print out of the alignment adjustments. The desired effect of asking for the actual specs they set them at is to see if they actually did put the car in the correct alignment area for all four wheels. Some shops just set the toe angle and never touch the camber or caster on the front or rear. If the car was at some time or another in an accident you may not be able to get every angle in the factory specified parameters. If the car has suspension mods such as being lowered the car will more than likely not be able to be set in the original Audi parameters.
If you get another alignment
Blue44 05-17-2009, 06:55 PM I would also like to note that there is no substitute for a car in the factory alignment parameters. If everything.. Camber, Caster, and Toe are set correctly(on all 4 wheels) the car feels great and is less suseptable to steering right with heavy road crown. The car also cuts through the wind much better with minimal direction change.
KevinGary 05-18-2009, 03:04 AM There is a TSB on whining from the rear differential because of wear on teh berring in the rear differential. If you want me to send it to you just drop me a PM with your e-mail address and reference the whining rear differential.
Rockstar08 05-18-2009, 12:16 PM Hi Kevin,
I just sent you a PM please send to me asap if you can, I just dropped off my car at the Indy dealer for the noise coming from my rear diff. This could be the issue.
Rockstar08 05-18-2009, 12:35 PM HI Kevin, I see your car is new to you also? I just bought my 05 A6 4.2 about 2 months ago. I do have that rumble when turning more to the left than the right but its getting louder and louder over the past 3 days and I don't have to turn the steering wheel as far to get the noise now.
I see that you also changed your tranny fluid and diff fluids also, most seem to think that works but when I asked the guru at the shop he said is what audi does to supposedly fix the issue but its more likely just a bandaid to the problem. Audi isn't really owning up to this issue yet but its becoming more and more on the A6's more with the 3.2's he said. My car is with Jose in LA at Eurotech motors and he is Highly recommended by everyone that uses him so I know I'm in good hands just waiting for his call. I just wonder if the wheel bearing could be the issue also.

I am the original owner of my 05 4.2. The tranny and differential fluids were replaced almost 20,000 miles ago and the rumble has not returned. Apparently Audi put the wrong ATF in some of the 05s and that is why the replacement with the correct fluid seems to fix the problem.
Welcome to the club.
Rockstar08 05-18-2009, 03:14 PM Just sent it to you in a PM thanks Kevin, that also makes sense about the correct fluid. Do you know exactly what the correct tranny and diff fluids are??
larsenracing 05-22-2009, 11:57 AM Well had it in to the shop for a look as there was a few other things I wanted them to do since the purchase of the car and sure enough they replaced it. I could have driven it a while yet as it wasn't very loud more or less just when turning one direction under speeds, but since the factory warranty is up in about 2K I thought I had better have them check her out.
