Is there much of a difference between the 2005 A6 and the 2006 A6? I have searched, but "vs" is omitted from the search because its too common, so I get everything with 2005 and 2006 in the results.
I would prefer a 2006, simply because its newer, but at the moment there are more 2005's around that are closer to my budget. I am not worried about push button start, reverse sensors etc, but would want Nav + Xenon headlights.
Any site I can go to that lists the main differences? and I am also assuming that a lot of it comes down to what options were picked when the car was bought new?
Thanks.

According to consumer report 2005 model year was the year of redesign and the reliability is better than 2006.

you lose out on the best (and fastest) color of course!

i would check to see if the 05 is still under warranty. 05 models had brakes included in the warranty -- whereas 06+ do not. Thats a 900+ saving if you do f+r. 05s had some issues with MMI, i would just make sure your MMI is up to date and that you have the latest Nav disk.

If you are going for the amareto interior, 05 won't including dark head liner like later models do. besides that biggest drawback, 05 is probably the way to go. You won't see any difference between the two cars until you're comparing 05 to 07 at least.

Great, thanks all. One other question, I noticed some have a color info screen and others the red monochrome screen, is that a particular package? I have read that the red one can be replaced with the color, so not hugely worried, but if I find one with the color would not complain.

I think those are from 2007 onwards.

Not without a visit to the dealer. You need a new cluster to get color DIS and you need the dealer to enable it.

oh, yea, i forgot about the new info display on 06 onward. It's a nice touch to the car.

also, I think it's the 2006.5 that have the color DIS, my older 2006 still have the all red display. As one of my buddies puts it, it looks like the cockpit of a fighterjet at night.

It's definitely not a deal breaker to have the color display screen, but it would be nice~!
I need to make up my mind though over the A6 or an Acura RL (I know the RL will be reliable, but as far as I can tell the C6 A6 is also pretty reliable).

Don't forget the fun factor of a A6 (6 Speed Overdrive).
Though as far as I remeber the 0-60 is little faster for RL.
But braking distance is lower for A6.
The headlight and trunk space is not that great on RL as well as the mileage. Also rear side airbags are not available on RL.

The RL looked like an Accord and was way overpriced/underpowered when I was shopping.

Not to go too off topic, but I'd like to know why the '08 A6 gets a worse than average mark as a used car buy when it clearly has less black marks overall than any other year listed. It's not clear how they come to that final conclusion...

I am in no way an expert but I think the issue with engine and transmission brought its score down.

The Honda connection, whilst good for reliability, puts me off Acura since in the back of my mind they are simply overpriced Honda's.
I think I prefer the A6 anyway, looks better, more space, better MPG, don't care about 0-60 or I would be looking at something entirely different. Found 2 different 2006 close to me, both white, one is an S-Line but 55k the other is non s-line but loaded and 47k, both are a little under $24k so I think I should be able to get them down closer to $21-22k (at least I hope I can).

Also true, I knew from pictures the interior looked nice, but actually sitting in there it feels really snug and everything is just where I would want it to be, apart from cup holders! lol, but I believe that's a problem with every Audi!

I wish Audi really address the cup holder placement issue in the C7, having a cup holder under the center arm rest is ridiculous. Good thing I drive alone most of the time, but if I always drove with a passenger that placement would get irritating real quick. And can we get some bigger cup holders for those 7-eleven mega-ginormouse slurpees? J/K =)

Good to know, but I am so over the SUV/CUV thing. Had a Forester, Xterra, and Acadia in the last 7 years, come to realize I liked the Forester the most. Sticking with a wagon, even though my A6 is a sedan, the A6 is the perfect size too. Q5 is a bit small in the rear compartment, checked out the VW Tiguan, was not impressed. To bring it back to topic, I don't think the C6 have any major problems, each line have its lemons but the 3.2 is a pretty proven engine and the 6 speed is rock solid. Someone mentioned somewhere, I can't keep track of all the variouse Audi forums, that tranny fluid should be changed around 50K miles if you plan on keeping the car for a long time. Even though Audi claims lifetime tranny fluid.

agreed. actually had a Q5 for 24hrs to play with.
'lifetime' means warranty lifetime in this case, imo. I'm definitely changing mine as soon as i have the $

Uhhh, how much does a tranny fluid change run anyways with an Audi? Seems like a G is minimum price point for anything done with this car... I am hoping that's not the magic number for a tranny fluid change.

Oh thank goodness, that's not that bad. I was starting to worry about having to part with another thousand bucks at the end of this year. I have just spent 2500 on new wheels and tires, looking at another thousand for new winter tires comes the fall. Throw in a couple of weddings and births and this is turning out to be an expensive year...
