press release says us intro march 2009, but usa quick ref guide says fall 09 as 2010 my car.
key competitors- C63 and M3. keep dreaming. this car will compete with the 335i. mb has nothing to compete with this car given its huge gap C350 ---> C63.
B8 S4 is down 100 hp compared to the other two "key competitors".
i think audi will hit a home run with this car.

I had been on the Q5 waiting list, but the 3.2L has killed it for me. I am disappointed no Avant S4 is coming to the US as of now, but now I can decide whether to pay cash for a S4 or a used RS4.

We all want Avant's. At least I do and probably a couple hundred more would buy an Avant the second time around.
Time for a petition!! I'm not buying another sedan from Audi. I'm on my second kid in 6 years. The market has changed. We have all grown and have different needs.

This looks like a BMW 335i or 335xi competitor.
The BMW 335 gets 17mpg city, 26hwy. The 2009 S4 needs to beat these numbers.

With this new chassis combined with Drive Select, Active Steering, and now torque-vectoring quattro, this car is a game changer for Audi.
I was thoroughly impressed with the A4 3.2 at a recent Audi Driving Experience, so I can only imagine how this new S4 is upping the game. Can't wait to drive it!!

It will be a much better car. The A4 3.2 is said to rival the 335 on some road courses, so I imagine the S4 will be an amazing car with the new DSG.

It has to withstand the tq of the S4 and most likely the upcoming RS4.
The one in the Golf has a tq limit of under 200 i believe.

Not mean enough. And if it's more $$$ than the 335, they'll really be in trouble...
I don't like the 3 aesthetics, but the package is enticing.

Like you said, with a second child I need something fast and practical. Unfortunately, AoA is too weak when it comes to creating market demand for its cars. BMW can design one of the ugliest pieces of crap, i.e. the X6, and still sell it, but AoA can't sell its Avants even though they're the best out there. Just don't understand.

Was hoping this would make my decision to replace my B6 S4 with either a CPO RS4 or new S4 a lot easier, but not the case. Once reports on handling, exhaust note, power delivery etc. start rolling in, perhaps then this will be an obvious choice.

the gas crunch of 1973 along with emissions requirements resulted in similar engine hp year over year cut down literally in half. Back then a Ford 350 would be rated at 280hp or so, then the very next year it was down to 150hp. Audi is taking the road to being more efficient, so this trend may continue down their entire line.
I bet the upcoming RS4 has less hp than the B7. But it will weigh less and be faster.

while i really love the s5 in many ways, the lack of a 'real' sunroof is a real turnoff. plus we have a jetta with the great 2.0t/dsg drivetrain and think the dsg is the answer to my (well my wife's) prayers to get away from a stick while maintaining performance characteristics of a stick. plus i'm happy to see audi move towards more fuel efficient performance cars. imo you will see a lot more of this in the coming years.
so i can see myself getting one of these in about 2 years, after the first year models are out and when there are good used ones around...
but i agree that it could use some more aggressive wheels as standard equipment!!

Car and Driver, among others, has reported the S4 Avant won't come to the US. I've spoken to AoA directly a few months ago, and was told unequivocally they have no plans to import the new S4 Avant to the US.
So I went out and bought a 2008 S4Avant while I still could!

They called in response to an e-mail I sent them, asking (again!) about the S4 Avant. Their response was to try to sell me on the Q5.
I said, very emphatically, thanks but no thanks. Call it what you will, it's still an SUV (with only a 3.2) and I don't want any part of it.
I just hope BMW, or Mercedes, or somebody will come up with a high-performance AWD wagon in the next two years because by then I'll probably be ready for a new car.

federalize and could help with economies of scale. I'm pretty sure it's the same proportion for bmw wagons. The only reason they're not bringing it over is the Q5, which they need to make sure has strong sales in the beginning, especially in an economy like this. I'm hoping that once the Q5 is selling steadily, then AoA will bring the S4 avant back. Wishful thinking I guess.

Buyers in their 20s/30s in US like cute utes and see wagons as granny mobiles , unfortunately.
Of course, it's not that way in Europe .

...small utes are better why?? When SUV's were the rage, it was because of cargo space and perceived benefit of AWD. Making smaller ones helped those looking for less costly model with better MPG. But now, I see folks bolting for wagons all the time because: easier to get stuff on the roof rack. Now, I'm on Portland, OR where the Subie's are king and a roof rack is a necessity of life. Maybe the PacNW should secede and allow Audi to market to us appropriately. Or the US should allow imports from Canada. What a stupid system we have.

Put one on a typical Audi dealer's showroom floor ( after the first 100 are sold in the US to the " car guys" ) and see how long it sits . Like the A6 6MT " we" all clamored for and that dealers couldn't sell after a year in stock.
Local BMW dealer had a new 535 xi wagon they couldn't give away because it had a 6 speed manual and typical soccer mom driver said " no way ,Jose " .

Dear Tom:
Thank you for your interest in Audi.
We regret your disappointment over the decision not to bring the S4 Avant to North America, and we will be happy to forward your note to the appropriate persons for consideration in future planning. The preferences and opinions of our customers are very important in developing models for the coming years.
Regarding your request for exterior color information, we do not yet have any listing for 2010 model year options.
Again, thank you for contacting us. Please write again if we can be of any further assistance.

================
Please provide your comments or request : Dear Audi Associate,
It was brought to my attention through several articles published this week at Audiworld.com and other reputable sources, you including, that the 2010 B8 Audi S4 will not comes to stateside as Avant. Please reconsider this. As a passionate 2002 B5 Audi S4 owner (sedan) my requirements have changed. When I first purchased the last MY B5 S4 in 2001, I had no children. Today, I have a 2 year old and another on the way in April 09'. My requirements of a performance vehicle has changed.
This also goes for the original market and age group that currently has or had a B5/B6/B7 S4 sedan model. We are seeking the Avant. Since history usually repeats itself, you will have an Avant in the U.S. after the first MY release. I may be wrong so please give me a little hope to wait one more year on my 110k mile B5 S4 (++another 50k by then). I'm not sure she can wait that long and neither can my family.
Please take this into consideration as my options are few, but negotiable if the 2010 S4 does not meet my family criteria for a new vehicle.
By the way, do you know the exterior color options coming in 2010 for the S4?
