Taurus 851B2UL About $400. 17 oz. 38+P
Taurus 651SHC About $500. 17 oz. .357
S&W 442 (or 642) About $450. 15 oz. 38+P
S$W 340 about $725. 12 oz. .357.
Reminds me of the last time I bought a computer. The optimal trade off of price and performance wasn't obvious to me.
If I were still a DINK, I'd stop wringing my hands and get the 340.
I don't have final pricing. I think that for $100 less, I'd choose the 442 over the 651. It's lighter, and nicer. If the gun shop surprises me with a deal on the 651, I'll get that one.

but I would buy S&W over Taurus if you can afford it. I'm pretty sure the SW uses higher quality metals

Looks cheaper than the +P offerings.
I spent some time handling the Taurus 905. Seemed pretty solid. The 642 was more elegant, to be sure.

it's out in the car, I can go check the model if you want me to.
At least no one currently carries such a thing. No 651SH2C or 605SH2 anywhere. I can find the 38 cal versions, but those are the same price as the S&W.
It's looking like a 642 for me.

The Taurus is nice don't get me wrong, I just think fit and finish is worth the small price difference. I'm not sure I'd agree with Green's comment about material though. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Taurus owned by S&W? If so I would think the forgings would come from the same place (Brazil).

so it's essentially the same gun, but I've heard that the metallurgy involved is not as complex.
This could all be BS of course, I can provide no proof as they keep metal composition a secret.

just like 9mm, .40., .357, .45. those holes with .45 are really much easier to see in PAPER.

In the meantime, Smith & Wesson had been purchased by a conglomerate named Bangor Punta. In 1970, Bangor Punta also purchased 54% of Taurus. Thus, the two companies became "sisters". Smith & Wesson never owned Taurus. They were both independent companies. However, during the next seven years, a great deal of technology and methodology was passed between the two.
1977 saw our present ownership buy 54% of Taurus outright from Bangor Punta.

http://www.taurususa.com/company/history.cfm</a
