I think I'm leaning towards the 551 or 552. From what I can tell:

551
- 4" long
- N battery

552
- 5" long
- AA battery

The 511/512 seem like pared down versions of the 551/552.

So if I'm not short on rail space and don't mind the cost, do I go with the 552? Is there any advantage to the 551?

It's the smallest version of the sight and has a nice ghost ring around the center dot. It makes a little quicker to pick up the sight.

I think the advantage of the 552 is that AA batteries are easier to come by.

Also longer battery life. The 551 is 200 hours continuous. The 552 is 600 hours continuous on alkaline batteries, or 1000 hours on lithium batteries.

If you aren't then there's not really much reason to pay the extra $200 just so its night vision compatible right?

...the 511 would be more than acceptable. I just think the 512/552 are a little TOO big. They'd do a little better on an SPR type of rifle, something that's a little heavier already.

the same batteries. Is the N battery common in military applications or something?

The Eotech seems nicer to use but I've never looked through a real Aimpoint, only cheap clones.

If I can get a 511/512 for $200 under what I'm seeing on ebay, then lead me on and I'll buy it.

The 552 is going for $380-400.

The buy-it-now price on a 551 is $369.

The buy-it-now price on a 511 is $329.

552 - Low price $459
512 - $360

Ok that's $100 not $200... but my case stands. I'm sure if you shop around you can find them cheaper somewhere. But beware ebay sales as many of the imported ones are near perfect clones.

Aimpoint had this problem with an import company in china who was making PERFECT clones of their optics and selling them as AIMPoints on ebay. People loved them and were only paying about half the normal cost. There was a huge fiasco. Just keep a good eye on who the seller is if you are buying from ebay with prices that beat the warehouses.
