I guess he was shooting a steel plate at close range (for a 50 BMG). Might have actually been part of the target that flew back at him. alot of energy dissapated there.

Good rule we use is to establish minimum ranges for various calibers.

I've seen guys get smacked by lead when shooting rifle calibers at hardened plate at 50 yards. Scary.

Thats good **** cause you learn from it.

Why even pull your gun out there? What was he trying to accomplish? Really Sad that he actually is a Federal Agent. What in the hell is the US coming to?

That coulda been anything that came back at him, but it was more than likely the core. He's luck it didn't hit him 2 inches more to the right.

From the sound of it, it was moving subsonic so it was probably a fragment thrown high into the air back at the shooter.

If it was the bullets core, that guy has the worst luck. :-)

From Here:

6-27-07: BOOM HEADSHOT! This is amazing. Willie, the father of Tina, who made the sandbag rests fires a .50BMG, an Armalite AR-50 and it ricochets off of a steel plate that it should have easily penetrated. The bullet comes straight back and hits him in the head. You can see it hit the dirt about 15 feet in front on him before it clobbers him. Luckily he was uninjured. He's a bit sore today, but otherwise fine. Lucky lucky bastard. He has been advised to buy lottery tickets while he still has so much luck. I don't know about the timing, but you can hear the hit on the steel plate. Time that till the impact on Willie's head... how fast is that 750 grain slug traveling? The range is 100 yards. Amazing.

I've seen alot of 50 slugs that hit armor and the jacket is torn away leaving the steel core slightly bent but still intact. I was wondering that when I watched the video, I didn't see any hanging targets.

Its always a good idea to hang steel plate targets the natural gravity tends to make the plate angle downward when hit which will send ricochets into the ground. And then obviously its not a good idea to shoot plate leaning against something as that will deflect rounds back up into the air or up and over the berm. Its also not a good idea to shoot hardened plate that is ridigly affixed to something as this will greatly fragment the bullet.
