View Full Version : Best Choke and Shot size for Pheasant Hunting. diehlryan 01-03-2008, 11:03 AM Gamefarm Pheasants. 12 gauge. also Chukars and Quail. snoogins 01-03-2008, 11:57 AM When hunting in Iowa, I always use a modified choke with steel #4 shot. The steel hits harder and brings the freakishly resilient Iowa pheasant down more consistently. Most folks, however, use a full or modified choke with #6 or #7 shot. diehlryan 01-03-2008, 12:41 PM #6 w/ modified or improved... I've never gone bird hunting but here are a few things I consider. I squirrel hunt from a canoe every year (float down a creek.) These are reserve Pheasant and not so resilient. any comments? snoogins 01-03-2008, 01:15 PM John Lee Pettimore 01-03-2008, 01:34 PM Remington Nitro Pheasant loads with 6 shot. They are very very fast at 1400 fps. Thats all i used this past season, and worked out great for me. As far as chokes, if you have a modified in or a full in when you are shooting clays (and hitting them) stick with what you are use to, after running 1000's of rounds through your gun with a modified choke hitting clays, it would be a bit silly to change it to a full choke just for hunting. Just stick with what you are used to Where about are you going hunting at? diehlryan 01-03-2008, 06:15 PM I received a GC for 1 4hr hunt from my Father-In-Law. My Dad received the same from my sister. When we go it will be: Me My Dad Father-in-Law Brother-in-Law and last certainly not least My father-in-laws Brittney Spaniel Cooper.

http://www.gunpowdergamefarm.com/

John Lee Pettimore 01-03-2008, 06:21 PM you won't be sorry, feel free to come out to South Dakota anytime, we get it done out here, better than any bird reserve. John Lee Pettimore 01-03-2008, 06:42 PM I sure have never had a problem dropping the South Dakota pheasant with 6 shot. snoogins 01-04-2008, 12:59 PM The cost is usually right around $125 per pheasant. I'm very thankful I know people that live in Iowa and have literally THOUSANDS of acres open to hunt. And we won't see another soul all day. |
