I have trouble getting info on how this sunroof does in hot climates. I live in Houston TX, and the sun beating down on that glass roof is worrisome. Anyone help with this question?

Reggie 02-19-2009, 10:33 AM have issues that showed up after it was released audiboi 02-19-2009, 11:08 AM you can tint the top for extra protection. you can also check the A3 and Q7 forums as they both have panorama sunroofs and have been selling in texas for years now. BayGBM 02-19-2009, 03:10 PM I believe Audi's assumption is that you your Q5, with the panoramic sunroof, will be parked in a garage when the vehicle is not being driven. This, of course, is simply not true. Big sunroofs/moonroofs are fine in theory but in reality many Q5s will be parked outside and in the sun for long periods of time. I made the mistake of parking outside one night and leaving the shade for the moonroof open. The next morning the sun came up and turned my car into an oven via the moonroof! Can you say greenhouse effect? Does leaving the shade open make THAT much of a difference? Yes! I have parked my car in the sun with the shade open and with the shade close and the difference is truly remarkable! If you do not routinely park in a garage or in the shade (under a tree, under a car port, etc.) beware! PGTT 02-21-2009, 08:07 AM It filters the light, but does not totally block it. A darker tint might be a good idea. thrilla from manila 02-21-2009, 08:10 PM Im in SoCal I could only imagine it be hotter in Texas. I hear tinting helps a lot though which is most likely what I'm going to do next on the Q7 Ed@mtl 03-02-2009, 09:36 AM thrilla from manila 03-14-2009, 02:32 AM Reggie 03-14-2009, 08:48 AM zepmoreau 03-18-2009, 02:30 PM the rollout fabric shade does quite a good job blocking the sun, that with the roof tilted open and you not so bad really! ayfourthreepointoh 03-19-2009, 07:04 AM Can someone verify the details on the sunshade for the panoramic roof - i.e. is there one? is it perforated? how thick is it? is it automatic or do you have to slide it open/shut with your hands, like with most sunroofs? if the sunshade is similar to standard sunshades in most cars with sunroofs, then the panoramic sunroof on the Q5 should not be a problem. pierreb 03-19-2009, 07:24 AM Can someone verify the details on the sunshade for the panoramic roof - i.e. is there one? is it perforated? how thick is it? is it automatic or do you have to slide it open/shut with your hands, like with most sunroofs? if the sunshade is similar to standard sunshades in most cars with sunroofs, then the panoramic sunroof on the Q5 should not be a problem. Exactly the same as in the Q7. There's a button, it's perforated, etc. kleinbus 03-20-2009, 09:33 PM Ex Tiguan I tinted 5% and blocked heat so well that I didn't need to use sliding mesh cover. Traded it to Q5 and now going to try clear tint that blocks sun heat rays as well as 5% but doesn't limit visibility. Anyways, does anyone know is there solid (not mesh) cover I could use to replace mesh thingie? manup 05-20-2009, 11:22 AM Ex Tiguan I tinted 5% and blocked heat so well that I didn't need to use sliding mesh cover. Anyways, does anyone know is there solid (not mesh) cover I could use to replace mesh thingie? Did the 5% tint help out with the heat factor? If so, what type of tint did you use, ceramic, other? For those of you in So. Calif., had any problems with excessive heat via the sunroof? My local dealer is telling me that ceramic tint will solve any potential heating problems. I'm not so sure. I'm getting ready to order a 2010 Q5 and living in So Calif., can be real toasty at times. What say you Fritz or Time89? or others with Q5 time under your belts in So. Calif.? FitzLA 05-20-2009, 11:51 AM I have had no problems with heat. The shade they have works great, better than I ever expected. jimmyly86 05-20-2009, 12:07 PM remember to have the shades on... left my car outside last night kleinbus 05-20-2009, 01:15 PM With VW Tiguan I had 5% tint on panorama and I baraly used shade as tint was enough. 5% blocks heat fine but it will limit your vision. Now with Q5 I have 20% and if I leave car under noon sun I have to close shade. Though higher % improved vision.... After 2 cars with panorama, now I know my next car is without it !!!!! edwyun 05-20-2009, 02:46 PM After 2 cars with panorama, now I know my next car is without it !!!!! I'm a future Q5 owner and I'm definitely ordering the Q5 PP package but WITHOUT the panorama roof. Too many issues with potential for leaks, greenhouse effect, and of course safety. kleinbus 05-20-2009, 03:43 PM I matter i wanted ceramic as it haves better heat rejection, I got non ceramic as that will affect signal transmitted by cell or any other source. Car radio is fine as antenna is on the roof. Now, I don't know how much it affects but physical fact is that any ceramic or metal particle on wave path will distort the wave and weaken the signal. I have no complains about the panorama or its structure, no leaks nor other issues. I'm just not panorama / sunroof person. BlackPrestige 05-21-2009, 05:44 AM Hey guys I leave my q5 in the sun all day with the sun shade retracted and it does get hot inside. Hot enough that the sensor on the thermo cupholders turns on. But not getting the panorama sunroof is just stupid, it is one of the reasons I bought the car. But not getting the panorama sunroof is just stupid, it is one of the reasons I bought the car. Couldn't agree more...gotta have the panoramic roof...but whats up with the thermo cupholders? You mean they actually activate when the car is off depending on internal temperature? Doesn't that run the risk of running the battery down? And besides, what exactly is the design purpose here? If the cup gets too hot, activate cooling so it doesn't explode? I'm unclear what the goal here is...love the idea of the heating and cooling of liquids, just not clear why it gets active when the car is off...please explain. There is a light on the HOT thermocupholder that turns on when you turn it on to warn you that the surface is hot. When I leave the car in the sun all day, and then turn on the car to go home the sensor light turns on even though the thermocupholder is not on. Its not a big deal, but I suspect that the metal silver lining conducts heat somehow. And there is one HOT cupholder and one COLD cupholder. I wish they both did hot and cold but they don't. BlackPrestige 05-21-2009, 08:27 PM I was disappointed to see that my car wasn't spec'd with it, but be Canadian I did get Adaptive Lights. Not to rub it in or anything... ;) yeah yeah :p pcasa 05-22-2009, 07:37 AM I have trouble getting info on how this sunroof does in hot climates. I live in Houston TX, and the sun beating down on that glass roof is worrisome. Anyone help with this question? Texas here! ... I had the same questions when I bought the Q7 recently - there is quite a bit of info on the Q7 forum - so far, no problem for me - I keep the car in the garage or parked in the shade so that I'm starting "cool" so to speak - and no problems with the interior heating up while driving - several on the other forum recommended ceramic tint, but I was cautioned that some tints might cause the glass to crack |
