Well a little surprise yesterday. I went to the Minneapolis Autoshow and of course stopped at my favorite booth (Audi). Sitting right next door at the VW booth with ropes around it was a Tiguan. After talking the nice booth babe into letting me inside the ropes, I figured it wouldn't hurt to check out the interior as well.
From everything I've read the Q5 will either be a kissing cousin of the Tiguan or bigger. Lets hope for the latter. Here is what I came away with:
* It looked smaller then I expeted. According to the BB it is 172 inches long. My hope is that the Q5 is more in the 180 inch X3 range.
* Sitting in the front seat and imagaing an Audi interior it will be a winner. Sits low and has excelent driving position.
* The back seat was OK. It sits up very high comapared to the front seat.
* Rear space was OK but not great. It had a cover the would lift up when you opened the tailgate - sort of like my 1990's Mazda hatchback.
* Trailer towing with the 2.0 is 2,200lbs so with the V6 or BluTech hopefully the Q5 will be 3,500lbs.
So I went back next door to the Audi booth and asked the Audi of America guy if this is what to expect. His only comment (which made me feel good) is that he expects the Q5 to be larger. He said the Q5 is bassed on the new Longitudinal A4 frame which is larger then the Tiguan which is on a Golf frame. Well if he is right, and the Q5 will be a slightly bigger version of the Tiguan then sign me up.
