"Expect the new S4 to compete with the BMW 335i for efficiency but the Audi probably won't have the edge in performance and will cost significantly more."
So what they're saying is you'll be paying much more than a 335i for lesser performance, but you'll have slightly better gas mileage?

instead of turbos. Unless they're going to put a clutch on the supercharger pulley, Mad Max style.

Technology-wise the new S4 appears to lead BMW:
* seven speed S-tronic transmission
* quattro with torque vectoring
* advanced FI engine design utilizing direct injection-Audi's FSi is more advanced than BMW's fuel injection systems
* advanced chassis control system, Audi Drive Select, with dynamic steering and suspension settings. BMW's systems, while first to market, exhibit shortcomings, especially with its dynamic steering. Will be interesting to see how Audi integrates suspension, steering and torque vectoring together.

Ward's AutoWorld TV article

Equivalent or better power than a V8 with BETTER fuel economy.

I wouldn't mind sitting in and listening to a few of those, not just the Audi one.

Very interesting patent assigned to Eaton. Several websites have mentioned that the new S4 engine is likely to be supercharged and the supercharger manufacturer is Eaton.
Eaton recently received a patent for an invention combining a supercharger and a turbocharger. The concept is similar to the VW Twincharger system; however, the interaction between the supercharger and turbocharger is different. In the Eaton invention the supercharger helps to "spool" the turbocharger to help eliminate lag.
BMW's sequential turbocharger functions similarly, using a smaller turbocharger that spools quickly to feed the larger, more lag-prone turbocharger for use in the higher rpm band of the engine.
I guess tomorrow we will have some information on the new Audi engine and effectively end the guess work.

Eaton WIPO patent

And on second thought, you can't have a twin turbo setup on their straight six gas right? So it has to be sequential....

Current S5
Auto: 10.8
Manual: 12.1
A4 3.2 Quattro: 9
BMW 335xi: 9.7
Proposed S4: about 10 with the manual/even better with S-Tronic?
As you can see, the S4 with the supercharged engine will get excellent fuel economy for what it will deliver. 17/25 should not be unexpected.
The only part left is the hp amount. Hopefully it will be more than the rumored 333.

seperate exhaust charge paths but with common plenum on the pressure side, just like the Audi 2.7l biturbo. They are in parallel.

The first article written about it is below, in German. I'm told it translates to:
As expected at the Vienna Motor Symposium, Audi announced plans to introduce a new supercharged V6 engine. It is intended first for the refreshed A6 and also for the next-generation S4.
The previous S4 made us of a powerful 344-hp normally aspirated 4.2 V8. This new engine will be used in Europe and North America and will be good for 350 hp in the S4.
Despite similar levels of power to the old V8, the new V6 consumes significantly less fuel. It will be combined with a sports differential from Magna, which will also later be used in Q5 and S5 models.
The new Audi S4 is expected shortly after the A6 this autumn. For the A6, the new supercharged V6 engine will be implemented at the same time as a new facelift and will produce 290 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque in the A6 application.

http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/news/auto_-_produkte/hxcms_article_511977_13987.hbs</a
