Seeing that the auto 997 Turbo is quicker to 60 than the manual, this could get interesting. Apparently it's as quick, if not quicker than the DSG box.

I doubt it is. From what I was told by Audi, it is a quick shifting TIP. But at the same time they say it is similar to the unit in the Q7! I did some checking on my own and if you refer to the Audi Germany website, the 0-60 for the TIP S5 is quoted at 5.4 sec. That is the same increase as seen in the old S4 of 0.3 sec between the manual and Tiptronic. That being the case, one can be pretty sure that it is probably a similar type gearbox as seen in the S4 vice a new quick shifting setup.

reason (as far as I know) - you can build boost with your foot on the brake before launching.

Probably not the best thing to do over and over.

No way IMO will the tip S5 be as fast as the stick S5. And I'd bet the speed of shifts will not be a noticable improvement over current Audi tips.

you'll see a statement that the tip shifts quicker than the manual (or human)can. Porsche have developed this probably because they have yet to create a DSG box that can handle the torque.

tip form (turbo only IIRC) because you cannot build boost before a launch with the 6spd.

With the tip, you can torque brake to launch which, again, I'm 99% sure they did to launch with boost.

I do not think the 997TT tip is faster because the tip shifts faster than people.

If you go to Renn-List and search the 997TT forum you'll see what I'm talking about.

This is a new box developed by Porsche and ZF, who own the tip patent, and can be installed in high revving engines. Audi licenses the technology from Porsche.

Is this new gen the box available in the S5?

As mentioned, the TIP S5 has a 0-60 of 5.4 secs. As you say, the New Gen TIP is supposed to faster than manual. Based on the 0-60, I doubt it is the New Gen TIP in the S5.

with your question.

My point is: the new 997TT is faster in tip form not because it can shift fast, but because of the way you can launch.

You said,

"Seeing that the auto 997 Turbo is quicker to 60 than the manual, this could get interesting. Apparently it's as quick, if not quicker than the DSG box."

I was just correcting you on 2 things: First, the 997 turbo does not shift as fast as the DSG. Second, the auto being faster than the manual has nothing to do with the tranny.

Apparently there is, although it's about 0.0045 secs. The new sequentials in the 430 Scuderia and the GTR are about 0.0030. The new tip apparently equals the DSG in shift times, but that has not been substantiated as Porsche has not published the times.

My point is that the new tip shifts quicker, and will shorten acceleration times. It's not merely the launch. I'm trying to get more info on that, although it seems clear that the S5 doesn't get the same box.

Purpose of this thread is to validate this and to see if Audi got that tip too.

their own DSG type box and was unaware they were spending time and $$ developing a new tip.
