I was having a look at the Cayman (again) on the Porche site tonight - quite a different car obviously - not quite as practical, not as all weather capable.... but looks like it could put a smile on your face. If they tell me mid summer for my S5 (Oct 4th order) then I may have to consider an alternative. Could be the Cayman or even the 335i, either of which might be available to drive away today, even if not spec'd to your exact prefs.
Any thoughts?

I would not put 335i in same category.
Cayman S was a great car. Loved everything about the Cayman, decide to go S5 based on my specific needs which involves a spot for the kids for fun rides and my golf crap. Overall I liked the Cayman best, but the S5 held its own as best I could push it. The V8 rumble was a nice addition. The Cayman handling and pep was much fun and I liked the driving position. The interior of the S5 and other gadgets was also attractive in my comparison.
I was thinking the Cayman as my 3rd car. Might be able to get away with the S5 as just my other car, but I will put the S5 to 3rd car duty until I am comfortable with that notion.
So if it my issues aren't an issue to you go Cayman S. What a great car.

It did indeed put a big smile on my face, but although it is very refined, I felt I would get tired of it as a daily driver (great for a weekend car though). The S5 is a grand touring car, and as such probably better than anything this side of a Maserati Granturismo.
Others have expressed the view that it compares favorably against BMW 650, and I would agree. The 335 is also a great car that drives beautifully, but it just doesn't have the class of the S5.

a different type of vehicle. I would have to wait for a Cayman if I special ordered it too.I would love the Cayman for weekends but just not practical right now for me plus I want Quattro. I am sure you would be happy with the Cayman if you decide to go that route
Thx - I have an SUV right now which I will keep - but I agree re carrying around your crap, I spend most weekends away at the lake house with the g/f and I tend to need to carry lots of stuff, which the S5 could probably handle most of the time (whereas Cayman would most definately not handle that load with dignity)
Funny that when I was looking at a test drive report (on the internet) for the Cayman last night there was an S5 advert right there alongside it - in phantom black as well, just like my order, made me drool once more.
I also just drive through some crappy winter conditions just today and there were a few cars sliding all over. Safety is a big issue for me and the S5 will be head and shoulders above many cars in that regard.
But nice to look at other 'car porn' whilst I wait I guess.

Big advantage over the 6 series and cayman. I like being able to drive fast in all weather and like full control in the rain. Knowing the car can handle almost anything is a great feeling and a stress reliever.
