The price for the S5 should be less than the new M3 now. Audi must be looking forward to the RS5 to compete with the M3.

This looks like an S5 with valvelift. But I guess Valvelift only brings it up to 354 horsepower. Just as it only brings up the V6 to 265.

So it will be 182.3 inches long.

Also no mention of S-Tronic (DSG)

Only mention of aluminum in the press release is the suspension and front wings.

But 324ft/lbs torque @ 3500RPM sounds good.

It seems that these are still Euro details, so it will still be interesting to hear what comes out in 10 more days...

I guess it'll have to be priced similarly too.

I mean seriously, what the fvck? Those engines are 30-40 hp less than comparable models from BMW, Lexus, Infiniti, etc... There is no torque vectoring, no magnetic ride, no DSG gearbox (CVT? LOL!), and really nothing worth a damn, in terms of engineering. And this car won't be light, as there is no mention of aluminum. The top of the line engine for the A5 is the same displacement as the top of the line TT engine, with only a bit more power. And that car is not only much smaller, it's mostly aluminum! The S5 engine is the same engine in the 4 year old car I have now, with a whopping 10 more horsepower. And of coruse, the S5 will cost more than the S4.

It's a goddamn shame that poor Walter De Silva made a car this beautiful but the engineers couldn't step up the plate.

Fvck. I'm pretty much turned off Audi, but I don't see anything else I like either.

Audi quotes a 0-100 km/h time for the current S4 of 5.6 seconds. Magazines have gotten the current S4 to 60 in around 5 second flat. Audi quotes the S5 as 0-60 in 5.1 seconds. Audi quotes the current RS4 as 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, but it does 0-60 in the four and a half second range. So it looks like Audi is confident that the S5 will have more performance than the current S4. I think the S5 will have more performance against the current S4 than the 7 killowats of power would indicate.(354 PS vs. 344)

Of course the idea of a 380+ hp S5 is much nicer.

Mentions of DSG, a new Quattro, Valve-lift with a substantial increase in power, and now... With Lexus IS, BMW M3, new Supra, new Skyline all having 400bhp+, this is not really competition performance-wise...

This is Audi we are talking about. My biggest disappointment is no TDI for the US market.

Sorry if revealed in the article. If USA specs this is quite a dissapointment for me. The only model to consider would be the S5. However, the restrictions on design (interior options, etc., are limiting) coupled with a likely loaded price in the upper 50's is a real downer. The best optioned standard A5 will not perform anywhere near the competitive offerings from Japan (IS and Infiniti) and they will be considerably cheaper. Only the rumored RS5 will compete with the new M3 and V8 IS models, though likely with the same pricing disadvantages. I'll go back and price\configure a loaded S4 to project costs for the S5. Haven't driven a japanese car since an old 240Z--will have to look hard at the new Infiniti coup and the 335i.

Maybe they still have a few tricks up their sleeve in Geneva? Let's hope so...

"At both the front and rear, the main components of the suspension are made of aluminum."

"Its lightweight body construction was achieved using the latest technologies, such as metal plates with varying wall thicknesses (tailored blanks), combined spot welded and bonded joints, and the use of aluminum, for example, in the front wings."

They said it would have all transmission options on the table, but doesn't seem so.

and will be good. My thinking is that maybe the engine(s) really do put out more power than the are spec'd at. How would the 3.2V6 be quicker than the current A4 3.2?

It seems the combination of FSI and valvelift gives a bit more top end power but helps torque quite a bit too. The press release states 0-100kmh in 5.1 for the S5, that should translate to 4.9 to 60.

With their slogan, "Never Follow"

I was hoping that the new S5 could be much faster than the curren M3.

Look what they have done.

THey just caught up to the existing M3 performance!

I know S5 is in between the New M3 and 335i,

but I expected more out of Audi.

And I'm sure S5 will start at like 50 grand if not more which is like 10 grand more than 335i.

You're right though, BMW is claiming a conservative 5.4 - 5.6 for the 6speed and SMG respectively for the 335i. I like the idea of a chipped 335i that can beat both the M3 and RS4.

I'd still take the S5 though. The rest of the features make up for a few tenths to 60...

This would purely be a street car for me. No DE's, I do motorcycle track days so a DE would be boring compared to that.

in the rear wheel arches. I don't mean that as an insult; just an observation.

Anyways, the interior puts the 3 series interior to shame. Easily the best looking guage & control cluster in its class and then some. I think the S5 will weigh around 3700lbs. I think it will cost around $60K. I think acceleration will be very comparable to the E46 M3. Anyone expecting it to match the E92 M3 will be dissapointed. I don't think Audi is interested in matching BMW's M cars blow per blow. Audi is more focused on making its S cars "all rounders" these days. The current S6 is ample evidence of that.

Regardless, I wish the S5 were coming to the U.S. sooner so I could test drive one!
