The location under the gear shift is much more natural to flick than having to twist a controller on the dash.

and controller on the main dash. I think the C6 A6 is the same way. You get a monochrome screen for just the radio and no MMI or you get the full color MMI/Nav+ and MMI controller by the shifter.

Your right JohnLZ7W there is a monochrome MMI screen available for the A6, in europe at least. Apart from showing maps, it offers prety much the same functionality as the colored MMI. Just with fewer lines and only 2 colors.
