On another note - has anyone experienced (in manual models) third gear not engaging (think of it - you shift in third and it pops out as soon as you release the clutch)? I wonder whether this is an issue or just part of the "break in"...

SilverCanuckTT 03-25-2008, 06:50 AM Goes well with you LED lighting I suppose ;-)

Did you get my question on the gear box?
so my LEDs are the only game in town:)
neighbours should be thankful for it!:)
Racht 03-25-2008, 09:00 AM Did you just put the clear bra on the bumper or hood as well? I elected to only do the bumper and side mirrors.
floormat 03-25-2008, 09:29 AM I do have the front tires scrubbing when the steering is at full lock, feels like a locked front differential, it's at the dealer now for some Euro rear lights and they're looking into this as well.
bumper, doors/rockers, mirrors, and some spots in the back where it is likely to get stones picked up by the back tires. The technicians were extremely highly recommended and it was worth it - you can't see the clear bra unless you were either told about it or the light were at a slight angle which may pick up the edge of the bra.
the dealer will be looking at the gears tomorrow - it feels like something underneath the gate is preventing the stick to get into the right position. we'll see.
svxit 03-25-2008, 03:35 PM Is this a normal byproduct of the Quattro setup? Two D2 A8s and three D2 S8s I've driven have all done it, but none of the Subaru SVXs or Legacies I've driven have. I always thought it was an Audi quirk, but wasn't sure if it no longer appears in cars (RS4, D3 S8, R8) with a greater rear wheel bias.
JeffAhn 03-25-2008, 04:22 PM like all R8 owners are expected to have their own estate?
DukeLeto 03-25-2008, 04:59 PM Do you only have it when at full lock or do you have it when going forward as well, departing from a full stop?
T.
floormat 03-25-2008, 05:25 PM But it has never happened on any other Audi I've had:
Q7
A8
A4
And only on a jeep when in low range
And it's getting less noticeable as the miles rack up, could be breaking in the diff????
Zeptepi 03-25-2008, 06:14 PM and get some bounce back. Plus there is nothing like waking up the neighbours with a kick-ass car.
Do you have a home owners association? Are you getting letters yet about the noise?
svxit 03-25-2008, 07:17 PM Only at full and close-to-full lock. Came to find out that, in Subarus, it indicated a tranny problem, but was normal in Audis. But not certain if this is still the case with cars with a greater rear wheel bias. If, for instance, Lamborghini Gallardos do this, then it wouldn't surprise me in the R8.
Der Kimbo 03-25-2008, 07:18 PM This is normal with the Viscous AWD system.
svxit 03-25-2008, 07:24 PM Interesting. I've driven a couple D3 A8s, but can't recall if they scrubbed. But yes, what I get is the same as you described; like a Jeep in low range turning on a high-grip surface.
Also interesting that other R8 owners haven't encountered this yet.
it happened to me once but i believe it was a function of my clutch engagement. i also had trouble with first gear a couple of times. the lever cannot be depressed in any way when shifting a forward gear otherwise it will not go all the way into the slot (esp. first). otherwise it'll cough and stall.
first gear/clutch engagement is finnicky. i noticed that when i tried too consciously hard i had trouble with it. when i took a deep breath and relaxed and imagined i was driving my S4 it went in smoothly.
i'll let you know more as the days go on.
car definitely takes a bit of getting used to. it is so wide (like my TT- which took some getting used to) and so low- even in comfort- that parking up to a curb or in a space with those cement things you can't get too close.

April 03-26-2008, 10:53 AM It would happen only in 4th gear, and mostly under higher load like getting on the freeway. At first I thought it was something to do with the break-in or my unfamiliarity with the car. Then I had the service manager drive the car, and he immediately agreed. Manufacturing defect - they over-nighted a transmission and had the car up and running in 3 days.
Hope yours is just a linkage adjustment!
