V10 version power, performance, and price premium justification for the V10 over the V8.

i ask you. if it costs 10K more (with optional equipment like ceramic brakes and DSG, etc...being standard across the board, etc...) just for the extra two cylinders...

and it makes about 100 hp more

and it does 0-60 in 3.7 vs 4.2

would you wait a year to shell out 10K more and buy it?

It won't cost only 10k more. With the uprated chassis neccesary to handle the extra power, and the development costs on the powertrain to recover, you will most likely see a 30k price difference- just my guess- but I bet I am not far off the mark.

The extra-ordinary performance of the R8 in it's V8 iteration will be so exceptional that the extra two cylinders will only be felt occasionally. I plan to get the V8. If I could afford the V10, it would certainly be interesting in terms of cachet. Paris can't come soon enough....

we are thinking a lot alike. 140K will be out of my range in 2-3 yrs. i sincerely hope the V8 will perform similar to the new NSX and lexus supercar (both of which come out a bit after) but both of which will have V10's....but that is probably wishful thinking b/c they'll probably be faster. the V10 R8 will be faster than those but also much more expensive.

i'd hoped that my R8 would be exclusive for at least a year. but once the V10 comes out that won't be the case...at least amongst afficionados. the average joe won't be able to tell much difference based upon looks alone, though.

still planning to go to paris, as well. even if only for 2-3 days.

I agree, also because the V8 R8 will look virtually identical to the V10, it will hold it's value extremely well! I have heard that the Lexus supercar will now be V8, but Acura still plans to do a V10 for it's NSX replacement. Being that it will be a front engine car, it will not have the same unbelievable presence and handling as a mid-engined vehicle. Also the Acura will be about two years behind. Life is too short to be always waiting...

where did you hear that the lexus will now be V8? hope you're right. i am sure it would be front-mid engined in layout, however.

did you ever get the RS4? everyday i think about it....but i realize it would be money thrown away if the R8 is so close....relatively (10 months)

is to save DSG for the V10. (either on purpose or just from production schedules) Then it would be even quicker (if they keep the V8 manual trannied only).

I'd wager Audi will do the V10 in DSG only, costs, production numbers and sellability being the reasoning there. (and that DSG is the best tranny on the planet too.)

I'm thinking that the V8 will be so stinking fast and well balanced, that the folks that can afford the car @ 100K or 140K would be silly to overlook it. Of course its their money and not mine, so to each his own.

Can't remeber exactly where I read about the Lexus changing to a V8. Related to their F1 development...
I finally decided not to get the RS4- combination of reasons. I drive close to 20 thousand miles a year and it is so fuel inefficient. Also the Canadian price was 40 percent more than the US price and I felt like it was a ripoff, considering that our currency is worth only 10 percent less. They may price the R8 with the same policy, but it will depreciate much less... (The R8 will be purely for recreation- not a daily driver)

...<font color="003366"> but your price estimate is low. Waaay low.

For starters the incremental price bump for ceramic brakes of a type up to the, er, duty cycle of the R8 would eat up over 99% of your price increase. The ceramic brake option on the S8 carries an Euro 8,000.00 tab. That works out to U.S. $9,981.07 at today's interbank exchange rate.

No, the ten-cylinder AU714 (<i>if such a vehicle were to exist</I>) will carry an appreciably higher price than what you're talking about.

On the lighter side, it will also be appreciably less pricey than a Gallardo.</font>
