I am thinking about getting a V1, hardwired, with the concealed display, but I am pondering these points. I was hoping you guys could help share some insight with me.
1: What is the value of the concealed display, if the main unit is in plain view, mounted next to the rear-view windshield?
2: Does it ever worry you that someone might break into the car to steal the unit, if it is always just hanging out on the windshield?
3: What other detectors would you guys recommend?
TIA!

1- Concealed display is handy if you drive in areas where a Radar Detector is outlawed. Also, some don't like to have their RD visible for the guy behind to see/use.
2- Not really <knocks on wood>. Mine is up next to the rearview mirror, so it's not very visible. Occasionally I'll pull it down, but not very often.
3- None.

it is mounted to the right of the rear view mirror, since I check the mirror often I really do not need a remote display. It is a small unit and the display dims and turns off so at night the person behind you will not see it if that is a concern.
It clips out very easily and I just tuck it in the drivers seat drawer.
A lot of people swear by the V1, I prefer the Escort and the new 9500i looks good, I would give that one strong consideration.
The escort has never let me down, but it is a personal choice.

Even if you have the "conceal" kits, the big unit still has to be mounted on the windshield whether its tucked in behind the rearview mirror or whatever.
So as a follow up question, is there some way you can get a V1 without the big unit mounted on the windshield?

and for me, I prefer to glance at the remote display versus looking up to main unit. My eyes don't have to travel as far with the remote display and if you go V1, you're going to want to see the arrows. to your second question, I don't think it's easily visible from the outside and if i ever feel it's an issue I simply slide it out of the suction cup holder, takes 2 seconds. So, definitely hardwire the unit in above the mirror and the remote display is a personel choice, but I wouldn't drive without it now.

The lazer detection...main reason I don't hardwire.

I have the Calibre installed and it is excellent. A little spendy but hands-down the best radar system I have had. It has a wireless remote for settings and there are two very small LEDs below the speedo/tach that indicate signal and whether it is coming from the front or rear. No one even knows it is in there...

If you're in traffic with other cars in front of you being shot, it'll pick that up. I've been saved twice because of that. True, if you are alone on a road, it's too late when it goes off, but definitely helps when there's cars around you (I.e. Freeway)
