View Full Version : Anyone import an RS4 from USA to Canada? CanuckRS4 08-15-2007, 12:33 PM I need some info on a few things, please get back if you can help. Cheers ! sparkhill 08-15-2007, 12:40 PM Search the RS4 VIN Registry for cars located "CAN" (Canada) and contact those owners. 1FastRS4 08-15-2007, 02:00 PM PT S4 BC 08-15-2007, 03:15 PM CanuckRS4 08-15-2007, 03:42 PM oilers90 08-15-2007, 04:38 PM I've done it. Once you get the bill of sale, you send this info to Audi and they will send you a recall clearance letter and a letter stating what modifications need to be done to bring the car up to Cdn specs. Until you get a bill of sale, Audi won't even talk to you. Unless you get a really sweet deal in the U.S. its not worth the trouble by the time you pay the exchange rate, 6% duty, and 6% gst (on the purchase price plus the duty). You also have to pay for an export license (for USC&BP), an import fee (Canadian customs), a registration fee (for RIV), in-transit registrations, and finally out of province AND federal inspections. I got a good deal on a mint condition RS4, so it was worth it to me, but some of the RS4's I see on autotrader would not be worth the trouble and expense. CanuckRS4 08-15-2007, 04:55 PM i'm getting a used one for 61G. I calculated that it'll save me about 20G compared to here. should be worth the effort... thanks for the info btw! oilers90 08-15-2007, 05:46 PM Is the car in MINT condition? How many K's does it have? Is it totally loaded? Check it out on Carfax to make sure it hasn't been in an accident. I got mine in MINT condition & barely broken in, and I saved about 15K. The modifications to the bumper bars and bumper shocks will cost you about 4K. CanuckRS4 08-15-2007, 06:28 PM Carfax was good, one owner, 8000miles, fully loaded, excellent condition. 6 months old. like you i'll probably save 15K or so after all is said and done. definitely worth the effort we get absolutely hosed up here on those car prices eh ;) oilers90 08-15-2007, 06:53 PM Sounds good. Have you seen the car? If it is a private deal (no dealership), here is the tricky part. Before you drive the car across the border, you need to: 1. fax your documents to USC & BP at least 72 hours before you cross 2. get a recall clearance letter from Audi to present to Canada Customs at the border - this takes 7-10 business days 3. arrange for intransit registrations for your travel in the US and from the border to home The tricky part here is that you will have to pay for the car and get a bill of sale so that you can get all of the above documents a few weeks before you plan to drive the car back. This means that you will have to trust the seller. If you are buying from a dealership, then they can probably help you out with all of this. good luck CanuckRS4 08-15-2007, 07:16 PM Thanks for the tips, i have worked all of it out except for this one thing... Who did you get the recall clearance letter from, i'm going to try and get one from the local audi dealer. Audi Canada won't deal with me until i have the title in my name, which can't happen because it's registered in the USA. If you can tell me what you did, that would really help out.... RIV.ca told me i don't need the recall letter to cross the border, it's only for the federal inspection part of things. Oh, and i'm flying down and driving it back from where i'm buying it...a non-audi dealership. thanks a bunch! oilers90 08-15-2007, 07:33 PM You cannot get a recall clearance letter from the dealership. You have to send a copy of your bill of sale (which shows the VIN of your car) to Audi. They will give you a case # and send you a recall clearance letter and a letter detailing what modifications need to be done (including part #'s. Until you have a bill of sale, they will not talk to you. CanuckRS4 08-15-2007, 07:38 PM Do you have to have that letter to cross back into Canada? I was told NO! It's only for the inspection part to pass it. Do you remember having to show it, i can't seem to find any info that it HAS to be shown at the border anywhere... thanks man! :)) oilers90 08-15-2007, 07:50 PM I just checked the RIV website. They have changed things - previously, you needed to present the recall clearance letter to Canada Customs to get your "Form 1" - you don't need this anymore. You will need the recall clearance letter / required modification letter to get your form 2 from RIV. You then present all 3 at the inspection so they can verify that you had the modifications completed - the required modifications will be listed on your form 2. Call the service dept at Glenmore Audi for a quote for the modifications - and make sure you're sitting down. S4@last!::Now B7 RS4 08-15-2007, 09:16 PM if it were somewhere in midwest maybe but not here. Thats why I don't buy my audis here in this state. I looked at a used Rs4 today and the owner wants 69.9k and wont budge he has had offers of 67k and has rejected. it has 3500 miles and truly is in Mint show room floor condition. 61k sounds too good to be true. At the very least see if you can bribe an audi service writer to pull service history for you. they are not supposed to do that according to AOA but if you know someone they may do you the favor. just be careful. The RS4 is not going to be cheap to fix. hardy 08-21-2007, 09:13 AM I brought an M3 from Canada to the US and in order to pass inspection you need to switch your odometer from KM to Miles. It is the same to take a car US to Can. Upon doing that your car will get a designation of "TMU" - true milage unknown. The second hand market seems to discount cars that have made this conversion by something like 30% to 50%. The resale on your car will not be worth the amount you save on buying one in the US. GCS 10-15-2007, 08:16 AM Actually, to bring a car to canada from the united states, the Mileage doesn't have to be changed to km... the out of country inspection is actually very simple, and only requires a few things be done... Daytime running lights, french version of airbag warnings, visible VIN on door panel... and a few minor items i can't bring myself to remember... although with the RS4, some bumper modifications are needed in order for it to comply with canadian collision standards |
