View Full Version : How many miles do I have left when my gas light comes on?? nealr 10-22-1998, 07:49 AM Its' a 98.5 2.8QM.
Just curious....
Neal
CraigB 10-22-1998, 07:55 AM ...according to the trip computer. But, I usually try to fill up before that, 'cuz the warning beep always scares the crap out of me! 8^)
HTH,
CraigB RobS 10-22-1998, 07:58 AM upon reflection, I realize that you probably don't have a trip computer or you would have used it by now. Disregard this........I'm bored. RobS 10-22-1998, 08:03 AM Don't they though? Man, whenever I hit the MPH 2 warning my heart stops. I think it's because I have it set at 85 mph and I flash back to the days when I had a radar detector. Solution: bumped it up to 90, now it goes off less. :) donp 10-22-1998, 08:16 AM JohnS 10-22-1998, 08:30 AM This is one of those items that is supposed to be standardized, but I've noticed that when the light goes on varies slightly from car to car.
At what point (1/8 full, 1/4 full, etc.) the light goes on is programmable with the VAG tool, but this is another item that most dealers don't know they can do. If there is an interest in having the instructinos posted, I might be willing to write up how this is done, otherwise I won't worry about it..
JohnS
igor 10-22-1998, 10:12 AM Wesley Walls 10-22-1998, 10:58 AM Scares the crap out of me every time!
-Wesley Walls
'98 1.8TMS nealr 10-22-1998, 11:00 AM 8-}
nealr 10-22-1998, 11:03 AM 8-}
igor 10-22-1998, 11:12 AM but the last time this came up, someone also mentioned that the fuel pump lives in the tank and is lubricated by the gasoline. If it dries out, could be trouble.
Another consideration is all the interconnected electronic systems controlling the engine. If you run out of gas, the odds are good that some microprocessor somewhere in the system will never get over it and will continue to give you trouble - probably intermittently.
And since I live in So Cal, I also worry about having to live in my car after an earthquake or have to race away from a mudslide or wildfire. Knowing you always have at least a half-tank can be very reassuring. Kyle Bailey 10-22-1998, 12:09 PM My trip computer typically reads about 45 miles to empty when the light comes on, but it has come on as early as 50 and as late as 35 miles to empty. I think it is tied to the gas gauge rather than the trip computer (since everybody doesn't have a trip computer) and looks like it comes on at 1/8, which is roughly 2 gallons.
The manual could have been a little more specific in this area. I think it says something to the effect of "get gas immediately". But then it appears that the manual was written by lawyers, so that's not surprising.
Kyle Rich D. 10-22-1998, 10:20 PM DJW 10-23-1998, 12:47 AM I seem to recall actually reading the "2 gallon" limit somewhere. How many miles you have left would depend on what engine rpm you use, and how consistently it can be maintained, tricky if you have varying terrain and inclines. The speed at which you are travelling when the alarm goes off probably is used to estimate the range remaining at that moment and I imagine that's why it varies from. But I'm just speculating...
By the way, has anyone been bored enough on a long trip to determine (at least for 5th gear on level road) what rpm gives the highest fuel economy?

Regards,
Dean W. |
