I finally got my NAV mostly working. I used NSXJR's harness, which works great except that we had to move a couple of the CAN pins. (They were offset by one row.) The TEL module can be seen on the CAN Bus and I have logged in and coded it with my VAG. Unfortunately, the NAV unit simply says "Telephone Not Installed" or something close to it.
We also discovered a serious problem related to the CAN Bus and my instrument cluster. The cluster is a recent one, having been built in 2004 and installed as a replacement, in my car in 2005. My NAV is a "P" unit from Europe, (HW 044/SW 080). Anyway, when the unit is on the CAN bus, it will go into theft recovery mode immediately when the cluster receives power. If you enter the code, it is accepted, then immediately recycled into theft recovery mode. There's something in the newer cluster that sends the unit a CAN message, telling it to "be stolen".
We tried all sorts of things with CAN pins, Bjarne's device, and the alarm ground pin, but the long and the short of it is, the older NAV unit does not like the newer cluster. Ultimately, we tried an older A6 cluster, an older S4 cluster, and even an RS4 cluster. All worked flawlessly!
We're thinking that I need to update the firmware in my NAV unit, at which point it will "like" whatever it is that lives in the contemporary cluster firmware.
As much as I don't like the idea of the Warning Message, I would like to have proper AM labeling and reception among other things.
Can one of you send me whatever files I need to make a CD that will update this thing to 110, and possibly some instructions or a link to instructions with a procedure for doing so? It is my last hope.
Thanks!
