I've seen D3 being calibrated - very easy. Just use live view at full magnification and then use the menus to saVe the settings for each lens. Canon MkIII is the same way, but Nikon's LCD is quite a bit better...

There are so many variations of how to do it and I am trying to find the most accurate.

was using a 45 degrees angled test chart, starting at the far end (I think about +20) and adjusting in small increments.

If you have a way to tether the camera to a computer, that's probably the most accurate way.
