My dad has the 2.8 IS and it's just brilliant. Works fantastic with the 1.4x too. One of the few zooms that do.

I tried the 2.8 version and it's just too heavy. I don't expect to do a lot of indoor zooming and even if I did, I could always rent one out.

According to the reviews this is actually sharper than the 2.8 version.
