Didn't have my UWA lens handy, so I had to make do with the 24-70 for this one..

And besides, a large number of contestants were russians!

in the army, filling the rear doors of armored personnel carriers (rear doors are hollow) with alcohol was, and I'm sure still is, common practice :)

A friend of mine was a glider pilot in St. Petersburg - they used to fill glider wings with wine instead of water (alcohol was prohibited at competitions). Usually gliders dump the water before landing, so one guy responsible for bringing the wine, accidentally dumped all the wine over the airport. He was almost killed by his peers, but reportedly it was quite a view - a glider coming in for landing surrounded by red fog from the wine :)

there's just something about russians and alcohol

Photoshop's shadow/highlight recovery tool can be very useful in situations like this. There's lots of detail in the water that can be rescued with the shadow/highlight tool.

I realize that the highlights in the water are blown out..

I usually do much of my futzing there, forgetting the plethora of tools in PS proper..

I'm amazed at the kind of detail you can pull out of/or back into the image when you shoot RAW and with a decent lens.. =)

I've rescued many absolutely horrible-looking images with these tools. Even with better pics the shadow/highlight tool is very useful for slightly brightening the darkest shadows and darkening the brightest parts like water and white clouds. Works also nicely with swans and other white birds. Possibly also with herons :)

I guess I should have taken a bazillion shots in veritcal and made a super stitch..

but really, I love my 10-20 for landscapes. And low light capability isn't an issue with landscapes as much as it is with portraits and other people shots..
