I currently own a Canon SD600 which I am very happy with. However I would like to take higher quality pictures when I go to events such as races and other sporting events. I don't really want to break the bank just yet, trying to keep it around $500 or so. I have been trying to read up a little on reviews a bit and I have been looking at the Canon Rebel XT 8MP with the 18-55mm lens it comes with and also the Canon G9.
I don't know which one I would be better off with. I would be keeping the SD600 as a camera for like parties or going out on weekends but I want to be able to take really nice pictures when I'm at races and stuff but I feel like I don't always get the results I am looking for with the point and shoot so I would like to upgrade to something a little more capable.
Can anyone recommend me a camera? I would prefer to stick with Canon.
Thanks.

I started out this morning basically set on the rebel, but I'm worried that all the accessories for an SLR are going to be more than I want to spend and also more bulky than I want. I always bring a backpack with me when I go to races and stuff but I don't want the entire thing filled with photography gear. The G9 seems pretty compact and not much bigger than a point and shoot but has a lot of the qualities I am looking for.

Scroll down a bit and do some homework.

I buy all of my equipment from there or B&H. Adorama has it for $455 now.
There are so many horror stories about shady camera shops online that I don't risk it.
The price you have looks good, but do your homework first and be sure the vendor is reputable. I don't know them. Check resellerratings.com.
between there and google. I think I may just stay away.

I think the G9 is worth its price, IMO.

That zoommania place was also a complete ripoff for shipping. They charged solely based on the price of the item regardless of the size. It was like $75 or something to ship it 2nd day air (I need it by this weekend since I will be at 12 hours of Sebring)

SLR that I will probably never use to it's full potential. I can't have another expensive hobby. Audis and golf are 2 too many!

Seller had about 10 and was taking "best offers" (BIN was $429 - free shipping and no tax)... I was suspicious at first but it was brand new, sealed in box, non-grey market so I took the plunge... No issues - been happy with it.

I have a small vid cam, but I want to be able to shoot pure digital, but I don't want a full on vid cam for that..
