You could try a wide shot, combining all the exposures like this from 2004:

The background was shot that night but wasn't what was actually there behind the moon.

Set the D200 on Interval and record the moon as travels across the sky...

Use the D300 to shoot the close-ups!

or did you piece them together from different composed shots of each phase(aka moving the camera between shots)?

What were your settings/what do you recommend for shooting this? I don't have too much polution here in storrs, ct so i should be pretty well off. I've never shot anything related to this before..

Settings I have no idea - I'm not sure I could even find the files anymore. I left the tripod in one spot and took pictures at regular intervals. I cropped each moon from the black background and pasted them all onto the sky shot. The settings listed in the links in the other posts in the thread should give you a good starting point.
