It's an impressive piece of kit. I've been looking for a cam that I can have on me no matter where or what I'm doing. Something compact enough to not be a hassle the way a dSLR can be. Typical P&S cams leave me in a state of meh. Not being able to have full manual control and shoot RAW meant that I'd have to settle for snapshots and I'd rather leave that to everyone else. I often want a camera on me when I ski but on days that shooting is not the #1 priority the 30d is a bitch to lug around all day, even in a chest pack it sucks some of the fun out of skiing. The G9 seems to offer the solution.
While it's controls are a bit cumbersome compared to my 30d you can get the camera to do what you want without too much drama (especially if you shoot a canon dSLR). High ISO images are meh, but that's to be expected IMHO and not a negative. The compact form and reasonable price point make it a no brainer to shove in a pocket and go. IS seems to work well and has 4 modes: Continuous, Panning, shot only and off. The macro function is also fully functional and works nicely. f/2.8 - f/8 is pretty much spot on and is more than adequate. Continuous shot mode seems really vague so far but I've only toyed with it for a few minutes thus far. I assume it'll perform better in small jpeg mode.
All in all I'm stoked to have this to play with this week on our cat skiing trip in BC. It should be a pretty good test for the camera both image wise as well as it's durability.
Image was shot in macro 1/16th f/2.8 ISO 80 handheld. No PP and only natural light.
