I'll consider a FF body when the price point falls to about 2.5K, until then I don't make enough coin/shoot enough to justify the 8K pricetag. Congrats, and I want to see the pics.

Thanks! Small-size pics posted on the net don't do justice to the originals. I'm getting very sharp images with minimal amount of sharpening. This was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting a lot softer raw files. 24-105L seems to produce very nice results and the 100/2.8 macro is wickedly sharp. I'll go out and shoot some proper pics with the 24-105 and 70-200 tomorrow.

do you really need that many MP?! or did you just want the full frame?

Sigh. It remains to be seen if the 1Ds also needs an AF fix. So far there have been no reports of AF problems with the 1Ds. Knocking on wood...

I wanted a 1.3x crop or FF body with weather protection. I'm shooting mostly landscape/nature but I also do occational weddings etc. and I do travel quite a bit. 1D Mark III was my first choice but this never-ending AF farce made me change my mind. 21 MP is a bit too much for me but I'll have to live with it. 16 MP would have been ideal for FF in my opinion. 1Ds Mark II was also an option but I decided to get the latest (and hopefully the greatest...) My first shots look very promising. I'm hoping the extra resolution gives me nice and detailed landscape shots. The 1Ds feels very responsive and quick, so I will probably also shoot some motorsports with it. 5fps is enough for my needs.

but it has some things that I don't like. The meter tends to be erratic in terms of over/under exposing shots, so I shoot many of the same photo. The D70/D50/D200 meter is different and much better imo. I did a comparison first hand with a friends D200, shooting the same shot and my exposure compensated to -0.7 was what his meter was reading unadjusted.

The real problem is, it's not always reading high, sometimes it reads dead on when without compensating. It's the real weak spot in an otherwise great camera.

From everything I have read the D300/D3 appear to have much better metering, MUCH MUCH more vibrant color interpolation, and their on camera active D-lighting allows for great highlight control and shadow preservation.

The third reason I would like a newer camera is that the D300/D3 do a phenomenal job at high ISO, which is great if you don't want to lug around a tripod.

I will very much consider the D300 if I can put some money away for it, but it's more a question of would I rather go on another trip and take more pics or buy a D300, well see.

Personally I am excited to see where they go with these cameras and what filters down to the lower end consumer models, i,e D90 etc

Ken Rockwell does a great job showcasing the highlights of the D300

D300 article

I wasn't sure you'd done enough to sell yourself on the D300 so I thought I would add a few more words for good measure! :-P

Why not wait it out until used D300's hit the forums (yeah, that'll be late this year before they become attractive, but paying list on that camera is silly...look at what new D200's are selling for now!).

I went and bought all this gear in late 2006, since then my spare money has been going toward trips.

D200 is selling on newegg with 2GB CF card for $1229.99 Damn, lot cheaper than what they used to be at $1600ish.

40 years from now, you'll remember the trip, not so much the camera you used on the trip. Well, unless you had a 1DmkIII on the trip. But nevermind I said that. Where ya goin next?

that week being spring break, perhaps we will wait until the following winter again, not really sure. All I know is airfare in the off peak seasons is cheap, with some roundtrip flights falling to sub $500 ticket range.
