I was going to get a D300 but now I am thinking of just buying used. I know I loose the mass of interchangeable lenses but If it is for a better camera in the long run then maybe it is worth it(full frame). Any input at all would be great. I have never owned a Canon so it would all be new to me. One over the other, for any reason, ect... TIA

I only linked one because I forgot how to do multiple links...

what do you plan to shoot? 1Ds is a great landscape/studio camera. Despite having a great AF system and weather-sealed rugged body, it isn't really a good choice for fast action, as the buffer is small, empties slowly, and the camera only does 3 FPS...

sorry for multiple posts - need coffee :)

EOS 5D has been obviously nice DSLR for me since September 28, 2005. The pic above was my first pic with EOS 5D here in AudiWorld forum on October 10, 2005.

My 5D's got three thousand shots on the counter, but I know that it means thirteen thousand shots.

link for 5D prices in kakaku.com (kakaku means price. )

and I found some shops in US selling EOS 5D cheaper than those in Tokyo.

link for 5D body at USD 1,799.95 = 64% off

but I also need it to be able to shoot motion with clarity. the 3fps bums be out since I was looking into the D300 with 8fps. I can live with this though. 17 RAW @3fps should do most anything I would ever need it for.

I may be able to find a deal with some added lens and such too I think... thanks

You never mentioned what you might be shooting. It's entirely likely that a 40D might be a better choice. And if you needed better autofocusing, the 1DmkII/n's are really nice cameras as well! All slightly different tools for different purposes...

I think that it will be mostly landscapes. A lot in the city though, so many focal points. I also am big into board sports and motor sports, so the shutter speed of 3 fps seemed a little slow. I would like to experiment with product photography also. As you can see the shots for now will be very diverse. I have a goal of assisting for a while and trying to build a diverse portfolio in the spare time. I am pretty new to digital witch is why I am asking around a lot.

I went down to Pro Photo today to check the cameras out first hand. I actually found that the D300 seems to be the one I like the best. The one big downside is that it isn't full frame. Everything else is great though. Getting the D10 base would up the frame rate to 8fps. This would help with the boarding and motor sports shots a lot. I checked out a fisheye for it that is great too. It has more then enough focus points. I checked out a 200mm lens with it also, and I liked the setup a lot. I think for all around, this camera seems more in tune with what I am trying to achieve at the moment. I really wanted a full frame but ya can't get it all on my budget. What are your thoughts RKA?

But they certainly do help when shooting action.

D300 sound like a great camera, so if you like the way it handles - go for it.

Or maybe consider a used 1D Mark II. It sells for about the price of the D300.

It has 1.28x crop factor - a decent compromise between full frame 1.5x Nikon D300's crop factor. It's a full-featured professional body with a 100% viewfinder... 8.2 MP, 8.5 FPS, about 20 RAW shots/40 JPEG buffer

I may check that one out a little closer before I make my choice. As for the FP I didn't mean I needed lots of focus points for landscape but more for thing you encounter in the urban landscape(people, cars, dogs, ect). I read that back and it sounds like I was meaning for the landscape shots in general, sorry. The + at the end was meant as plus what is inside the message. The snowboarding and such.

If I didn't have a gaggle of canon glass, I might jump ship. Alas, too much work to switch camps. Just have to wait for Canon to leap frog Nikon.

I wonder how much of an edge a 1DmkII might have over the D300, if any at all??

I am going to have to buy a program to get it to sync to the mac though. Where as the canon would do this out of the box. I think for the price you pay for it you get more then any camera canon can put to the table for the same price. If price wasn't a factor I would maybe look into the 1D a little more. I have time though, so I will wait and see where things take me.

Canon gives you DPP or some software so you can work with the RAW files from day 1, but ask people here and you'll find that almost everyone has purchased some other photo editing software. Photoshop Elements 6.0 is available for $60-80, and it can do a lot of things the full version of photoshop can do except layers I think.

I think the missing software really only comes into play when you first open the camera...down the road it's insignificant.
