Anyone here got a strong recommendation one way or the other? Or should I wait until the end of the year and hope for a 5D Mk. II?
(I only one one EF-S lens, and I'll sell that with the Digital Rebel when I get a replacement camera. All the rest of my glass is full frame ready.)
5D ~$2100
40D ~$1100

So When I see a good deal on a 40D, i'll probably go with that. Ive read alot of comparisons and the 40D is right there in image quality with the 5d. Plus its got a few fancy new tricks over the 5D.

Canon was suppose to announce the 5D replacement at PMA but should be at Photokina. Once the new 5D replacement is announced there should be a ton of 5Ds up for sale. Seems that the majority nowadays needs to have the latest and greatest gear thinking it's going to make their photos look even better.
Honestly, even with this new replacement (14-bit, DIGIC III, blah blah blah), the 5D is still a very capable camera and price for a used one is going to make it very attractive IMO.

5D is excellent with landscape and portraits, but its fps is rather lacking.
i ended up going with the 40D as upgrade over my XT being that its still cheaper and with new features that id prefer, plus i got 2 nice EFS lens. id luv to get a FF one day though. we'll see what happens when and if they come out with a 5D upgrade lol
And if he has a 10-22 he can get the same frame the 5D shot over the D40. He said it was klunky and slow but took great images... Now im sure he was exagerating with that.... but he seems to have the best camera for any type of shooting.
I think for me personally, If I get the 40D and they come out with a better camera in a year im still in good shape since then I'll have the 40D as a backup/second cam...

If you want to shoot stuff far away, once again, the cropped sensor in the 40D may be the better choice.
The 5D has a small edge with image quality, and the full frame is great for shallow depth of field shots. And if you come from 35mm world, all the lenses work exactly as they did with film (same depth of field and framing).
There are many things that are open to debate, but this question usually boils down to these simple answers regardless of which forum you browse. Two very different cameras for very different needs. Should make decision making easier...

The only real advantage I see of the 5d is full frame right now. 5d Mk II will change all of this. I love the 40d... glad I picked it up. Im shooting some outdoor action shots next week so the 6.5 fps will be welcomed. Live view is great. I was surprised how well it did in a studio enironment. (after I got over the lack of full frame)Of course all this well be implemented on the next gen 5d but right now it is not.
If you purchase a 5d now the resale will be terrible once the new one is released. The 40d on the other hand was just released and uses newer technology. And it is a cheaper camera. I say buy a 40d and in 8 months or so upgrade to a 5d mkII. You will probably be able to sell the 40d body for 8 or 900.
Here are some other things to factor in...
Wide lenses (such as 17-40L) will not be true 17mm at widest focal point on 40d. In order to get the 17mm equivelent on the 5d you would need to purchase the 10-22mm lens which will not be compatible with the 5d if you plan on upgrading. (17-40 does work great on the 40d though and is wide enough for my needs)
Software! Im not sure if anyone has said anything about this. Since upgrading to leopard getting the 5d to tether has became impossible. The canon utility does not recognize the 5d and doesn't even list it as a supported camera anymore... (strange) Capture One Pro, another option, has not been upgraded for leopard just yet.
On the other hand the 40d, I took out of the box installed the softward and was shooting tethered with the EOS utility into lightroom. Live view on the laptop monitor really came in handy when composing a still life on set alone in studio.
So the 5d becomes a difficult camera to tether currently.
Not as good of a sports camera.
No live view, sensor cleaning, digic 3, newer technology.
Of course this will all change soon but as of right now.. it wouldn't make much sense to purchase a 5d IMO, especially considering the resale values.

it speaks directly to the image quality of a full frame sensor over a crop sensor.

I read as much as I could google on the 5D and the 40D

I'd really like to have the full frame sensor. I understand the advantages. But there are too many drawbacks to the current 5D. Not even including in that the 2X price factor.
One of the things that's killing me with the Digital Rebel is the slow frame rate (2.5 per sec). The current 5D is scarcely better, although the buffer is much larger (and that would be an improvement).
Thanks.

I think the 40D is the way to go right now.
Here's to hoping for a 5D Mk II this fall, at a reasonable price, and a quick return of Canon's double (triple?) rebate. :)

i recall something where the EF-S only works on certain Canon SLR's.
