I was intetionally trying to play w/ some funky DoF, but I was finding it hard to get the right distance w/ the Canon 100mm and keep a reasonable DoF.

I would have increased the DoF (if possible - what's your EXIF?) and focused on the wheel's logo instead of the spokes. In the first pic, there's really not enough in focus to draw interest. What IS in focus isn't that interesting (to me anyway). A different angle may improve things a bit so more of the subject is in the same plane of focus.
