I guess it pretty well depends on what you're shooting.

Don't throw away your money...spend a little more and get a quality lens. Make sure it meets your needs! Do you like to shoot wide? Are you shooting with a cropped sensor? Regardless if you are shooting with a cropped sensor or not 55 is not wide.
