caught a show over the weekend and started chatting with them after sound check. they mentioned that they were looking for more live shots as well as some promotional shots.
they're a hilarious band and make fun of a lot of things. any ideas on situations to photograph them in?

Go to their next show then show them the shots. Looks like for this band you should be shooting some of their antics. Im sure that will make them happy.

Do they use their own lighting? Do you have multiple flashes? Wireless transmitter?

then get a feel for them, to get some 'band' shots.

no wireless transmitter, but that was on my list of soon-to-buy items.
the two shows that i've been to they use whatever lighting the venue has.

I would think capturing the humor on "film" will be an interesting task!

In a previous life, theatrical lighting was my career path... I used to photograph my designs/rigging.

It takes a LOT of strobe power to light up a stage... and if you're trying to go without strobe... think high ISO!

I used to shoot 1600 ISO film, and still had a lot of trouble with motion blur if the actors were moving much.

this band I shot in December certainly had some powerful stuff.

I worked on larger stages... but I was usually working with 20-30,000 watts of lighting, and still shooting 1600 ISO.

I was hired to shoot them at a private party in December.

Took over 500 shots of the band...they performed for over an hour at a private residence, and hung out with the host and his family for most of the evening signing guitars and partying...VERY fun! I had never watched Rockstar INXS...I had listened to the Michael Hutchence led band as a teenager, and I was quite surprised how talented "JD" is...that kid can sing!

Different than Hutchence, but does the job fine.

I totally agree...michael Hutchence was the man...but JD truly shocked me. Driving to the evnet I thought they were gonna suck...they were quite good!
