Set up my ghetto studio here in the loft. It's only ghetto in space as the gear is quite nice. 3 AB800's and a 4' roll of Alpine White paper backdrop suspended on a dowel via rope slung over the fire sprinkler water pipes. Heh...pretty tard but it works. The AB800's are set up as follow: 1 in a 4' octobox, 1 on a boom with a honeycomb grid for a hair light and one on the floor behing the model with a backlight shield on it. I have a large reflector out front ona stand playing mirror to the octobox. I'm using a pair of pocket wizards with one on the camera hot shoe and the other on the boom light ( I wanted to be able to trigger the hair light alone to get the angle right).

I did quite a bit of ****ing around with the set up and trying to see how it'll all work in my loft. It's kinda tight on space but it'll work. Thank god for 13' ceilings. At least my model was very patient.

All these images are straight from the camera. All I did was resize and convert to jpg. I was messing with various settings along the way as far as each lights levels so there is a bit of randomness to the images. All in all I was pleased with my first few strokes in the deep end of this pool. The reflector and "weak" side lighting is still a bit of a mystery to me.

The first shots I took were with just the soft box.

Then I added the reflector.

Then the boom / hairlight with a 10 degree grid.

Then the white paper background.

Then the backlight

And swapped to a 40 degree grid on the hairlight.

I need to raise it off the floor a bit. Trouble was the damned dummy head was sitting so low everything had to be scrunched down. I was shooting sitting in a chair.

Looking good, and you're making me quite envious of those ABs. Was the backlight off to the left side? Putting it directly behind the "model" may even out the background lighting. Yes, the hairlight makes such a difference, but you don't realize it until you use it. Then it all pops into place.

I might also have some super rad pics from a pretty neat shoot I'm getting to watch tomorrow evening.

it may have been a mistake, but remember with strobes, if you don't want leak from ambience light, to shorten your shutter speed to near 200th of a second. unless its completely dark. also, strobes are typically rated at 5600k and in a basement, ambient is typically tungsten (3200) so you will get funky color like the first.

And again, im sure it probably was a mistake, but the other ones look great! cant say i have ever shot a dummy! :)

there's a crew shooting my parents house for an ad this afternoon. The door company that built their doors is all hot and horny for the way they look. Supposedly the crew had this cam with them
