View Full Version : Probably going to grab a 30D in the next week or two. What is the go to lens for typical shots? Dan McBoost 04-30-2006, 12:33 AM I am buying a body only. Before I buy a macro and a telephoto lens, I need a good all around lens.. TIA, SVAudi 04-30-2006, 01:44 AM I was debating whether to mail order it for cheaper or just pay the retail at the local store and went with the local store 'cause I wanted the camera for this coming weekend. I've got the 17-85 IS on the new body, which was formerly on my 300D. TristanP 04-30-2006, 04:47 AM SpfldS4 04-30-2006, 07:20 AM easily fixed with PT Lens. Only happens at 17mm. I love the focal length, IS and contrast. This with the 70-200 f/4L make for light travel and they can share filters. TristanP 04-30-2006, 07:32 AM I have dreams of the 300/4 IS for motorsports now, though. Damn lenses and $. German Driver 04-30-2006, 09:55 AM SpfldS4 04-30-2006, 10:41 AM need and tack, tack sharp. Plus I need something to do in between portrait shoot, it should be a fun lens. I did 6hrs of yard work yesterday, told the wife I save her at least $300 in labor costs, but that I wasn't free either. She said to put it on my fathers day list, woot! ddderekkkkk 04-30-2006, 04:02 PM Island Boy::Jeproks 05-01-2006, 08:30 AM looey 05-01-2006, 09:27 AM as it also fits with the 24-85mm I have laying around, too. [not Steve] Trac 05-01-2006, 11:45 AM I think on 1.6x SLR's that 17mm isn't wide enough and you'll end up with a wide angle lens that covers about 10-20 or 22mm anyway. And you'll of course buy a long range telephoto as well. So, I think the 24-105 fits nicely in between.

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-24-105mm-f-4-L-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx

TristanP 05-01-2006, 12:07 PM But the difference (for casual shooting at least) between 24 and 17 mm is huge. Plus it's more than 2x the price. Of course I'd love one. :-) EF-S 10-22, 24-105, 70-200/2.8 IS is a killer combination for Canon zooms on 1.6x bodies. [not Steve] Trac 05-01-2006, 12:22 PM Since I have the 10D the EF-S lenses don't do me any good. Currently have: 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS, 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS, the 50mm f/1.8 and the following older/cheap Canon lenses (24-85 and 22-55mm). I also had a 55-200 that I just sold for $75 (woohoo!). I'd like to sell off the 24-85, 22-55 and 28-135 IS lenses and then buy the 24-105 listed above. I think the 24-105 and 100-400 gives me great coverage of the mid and long ranges. And then at some point I'll pick up an ultra-wide. Currently have my eye on the Sigma 10-20mm F4.0 - F5.6 EX DC HSM, but also waiting to see what other ultra wides come out for non EF-S cameras. I'm not convinced that the EF-S mount is going to be on all Canon cameras going forward, and I see myself stepping up to what might be the 5D's successor someday, or possibly picking up a 1dsMkII on the used market, so I want my lens lineup to be compatible in that respect. TristanP 05-01-2006, 01:59 PM How many 300D/350D/20D/30D are sold compared to the higher end offerings? A 5D and 24-105 is a beautiful combo, though. |
