Still learning but I'm pretty happy with these shots I took in Topsail, NC this past weekend.

<img src="http://www.brokendetails.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=11770&g2_serialNumber=1" />

Here is another sunset that I processed a bit:

Got a Sigma 70-300 for christmas and so far I'm pretty happy with it. I was leaning towards the Canon 70-300IS but for the money I had a hard time giving it a shot as I wasn't expecting much.. Here is a shot:

100% crop at 300mm f/7.1
<img src="http://www.brokendetails.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=11788&g2_serialNumber=2" />

and another 100% crop at 300mm f/9 using the macro mode:
<img src="http://www.brokendetails.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=11785&g2_serialNumber=2" />

Haven't had alot of time to test it out and hope to have some wide open samples soon.

Regards

Hee hee...just kidding! I want to see how many people look at this thread now! :-P

I love exposure in the first shot, I just wish you had not centered the hut in the frame.

The second one is good, but doesn't appeal to me, and the third is interesting...what did you do with that in post?

That sigma lens looks pretty sharp. In the bird pic, it seems like it focused behind the bird though (I'm looking at the sand, and it appears sharpest a few feet behind the sea gull). Play with it some more...could be you just misfocused in that particular shot.

thx for being the first :)

On the first shot...I have a few like the 3rd one which I had the hut off center and in hind sight I wish I would have taken the a few more at that exposure but there was such a short period of time the sun was like that. Its funny how quickly the sunset can change in a matter of a few mins. Looking at all my shots...they were taken in a matter of mins and all look different.

Yea I noticed the focus wasn't quite right on the bird as well...I'll have to see about correcting that.

Thanks

to the 70-300IS. Almost bought the 70-200 f/4L but really wanted the extra range. I may go the 200mm L + 1.4TC like you were thinking about doing.

f/4 and am very happy with the decision. The only reason I'm switching to the prime is because I need a second lens for the triple rebate and could probably do without the zoom...lets hope.

I've watched the sunset on quite a few occasions, and noticed exactly what you're describing. The light changes pretty quickly, so you have to meter, fire off a few shots, and in 3-4 minutes meter again, and take a few more. The hard part is when you're learning and fumbling through the process of getting a good exposure...by the time you get set up...you need to adjust because the lighting has already changed.

Well, in my case I want to be able to sunrise or sunset pics of a car with a NYC backdrop. I can see my window being no more than 15 minutes, and I can see myself fumbling for 20 minutes trying to get a nice shot! :-P

looks like a killer shot...but things are kinda fuzzy. was that the intent with the processing?

it certainly makes for a very warm and cozy mood.

was mainly just messing around in CS2 trying to build some sort of midnight sepia effect.
