why is it dark?

i was shooting with the hood for the 17-85mm and with Aperture priority. is this a hood remnant?

on another note i think i've already hit the wall on the 17-85 IS USM...the focus is sharp when i take care to limit the focal point. but when using a small aperture and seeking depth below 50mm the focus gets very soft.

Take the filter off and retest. Assuming it is the filter, they make slim filters, just make sure you get one with front threads, or your lens cap won't fit/stay on.

As for the softness wide open...that's probably normal, but you'd need to post a sample to get more feedback.
