View Full Version : Okay, can someone find me a DSLR for under $700 with a lens? Can I find a decent one for that
needforsleep 12-19-2005, 06:26 PM price or am I looking at getting one used? I'd prefer compact Flash since I have tons of cards left over from my Canon G5, so I guess a Canon DSLR would probably be best for me, eh?
I'm a DSLR noob, so what should I look for?
TristanP 12-19-2005, 07:05 PM Pretty sure you won't find it for under $800 (after rebate). Used is a whole other story.

SpfldS4 12-19-2005, 07:32 PM Used Canon Rebel w/ 18-55mm kit lens for $475
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 $65 new
Sigma 70-300mm Super APO DG f/4-5.6 $165 used
Nice starter package for just $705.
needforsleep 12-19-2005, 07:41 PM classifieds?
TristanP 12-19-2005, 07:42 PM I takes SD cards, though, so you'd need to spring for new memory.
SpfldS4 12-19-2005, 07:50 PM there now, but you can still find a few Rebels. The Sigma will apear now and again. You can always make a post for each item as WTB and you will get a lot of replies. Good luck.
needforsleep 12-19-2005, 07:55 PM now that all the x-mas presents are purchased I have an idea of what my budget is. Gotta have priorities though, the A4 gets new Snow tires (Hakki RSI's), then I treat myself to a DSLR and throw the G5 away (ebay it).
Thanks again.

needforsleep 12-22-2005, 02:38 PM auto shows, and vacation city/landscapes. I had a Canon Powershot Pro70 and currently have a Canon G5 with Speedlite 220EX. I've found that the G5 can't keep up with faster moving subjects and low light conditions.
needforsleep 12-22-2005, 08:23 PM with rebates it's around $860. Can't beat that with a stick.

Mike S 12-23-2005, 03:15 PM Abes of Maine from well, NY and many have horror stories.
I recommend Robertsimaging.com in Indy, Camera World in Oregon or Calumet in Chicago.

needforsleep 12-24-2005, 09:53 AM company, but still I think with rebates it turns out to be just over $900. Thanks for the recommendation. I think I'll try onecall.com or buy.com.

Mike S 12-26-2005, 09:33 PM any NON grey market gear and will ship it to you at about 20% the cost.
There is a reason Sports Illustrated and the entire Time Catalog, based in NY, deal with an Indianapolis based dealer.

SpfldS4 12-27-2005, 07:24 AM rebate lens. I think I will go with the 85mm f/1.8. I was going to just order everything from B&H but I'll try giving Robert's a call.
Mike S 12-27-2005, 03:35 PM Call Roberts (www.robertsimaging.com) and ask for Jodey.
Tell him Mike Stahlschmidt sent you and that you want my pricing!
He will help you out and what you get will be new, sealed, US market and delivered to you at a fair price.
Their used stuff is guaranteed, as well.

SpfldS4 12-27-2005, 05:08 PM 20D, 50mm f/1.4 & 85mm f/1.8. With the 17-85mm and 70-200mm f/4 I should be good for a while. I have to of course dump all my gear on FredMiranda or Ebay. I know I'm overlapping with my primes and zooms but I like the bokeh for portraits from the primes. I'll have to think about this and give Jodey a call this week. Thanks again.
SpfldS4 12-28-2005, 12:56 PM he couldn't match B&H price on the 20D. He said he would be losing money after credit card fees if he went lower than that. He matched the lenses. Not sure if this was retail or your pricing, but I didn't see much of a savings. He was really busy filling orders on the MarkII Ns that arrived finally. Thanks again...oh he wished you a Happy New Year!
