my guess is this type of lens will cover me for most situations aside from portraits and micro stuff.

i'll look into getting a used 70-200 off eBay for my 35mm SLR.

i've got an old 70-300 and was wondering about getting something better... i was thinking about the 70-200 L, but the older model the f4.0 instead of the new f2.8... just b/c of the $$$...

f2.8 is nice, but for one extra stop you're paying twice the price, and getting a much heavier lens to boot.

Unless you're buying new, I would tend to avoid ebay. You never know what you're getting over there. Try fredmiranda's buy and sell forum. If the seller wants a reference, ask them to PM me over there (R_K_A is my id). I've been posting over there since Sept of last year, and have dealt with a good number of people over there (almost everything I have has been purchased secondhand through Fredmiranda). You should probably expect to pay around $500 for this lens in good shape with box, manual, etc. They come up for sale pretty often.

If you get the F4 and then needed something faster, well.....
