Few different ideas:

1) just buy a few medium size CF cards, knowing that I will have decent access to internet cafes along the way where I can either upload photos to a website or burn them to CDs,

2) buy a cheaper laptop with large storage, but then I have to carry a laptop as well. Would be nice for the longer plane/train trips as well.

3) buy a digital wallet type product like:

or

No matter what I do, I fear having something happen along the way that would make me lose a batch of photos... Either by being robbed, losing something, having a hard drive error... whatever...

every few hundred pics, I would burn a CD and mail it back to home as a backup plan.

for a 4-6 month trip, I'd bring a laptop and also back up to DVD-R's.....

I shoot RAW only and would need TONS of space for a 4-6 month trip.

I also wouldn't trust a portable device for any extended period of time.

is to make two copies. One to keep with you, and one to mail home while you're in town.

That way, even if you're robbed, you'll still have a copy of the photos

but keep one DVD with you and fedex the other. some might consdier this to be overkill, and a few days ago i might have agreed, but a friend just had her rental car stolen in europe and lost a months worth of images that were only kept on a laptop.
