As someone who still shoots film, I wonder if I ever got into a "no, that's my shot" dispute, if having the actual negative would serve as proof of ownership. Or if someone else could take a high-res digital scan and make a negative/slide from that.

Otherwise, ownership is tough to prove, but it's rare to have a theft where ownership is actually claimed.

Thefts aren't uncommon, but the violators (and I've caught a ton and litigated a few, all 100% successfully) rarely claim ownership.
