View Full Version : Rear Seats - rough ride

I had the opportunity to sit in the second row of seats the other day and was quite shocked at the rough ride -much much worse than the front seats, and definately not what one would expect.

I have 7 seater 4.2FSI with active suspension. The suspension was set to automatic and comfort - same result.

Have any of you heard of this - is it normal?

Thanks

what size wheels and tires. I have noticed a difference with the 20" and 21" tires over the standard.

and I've been pleased with the ride everytime I've been back there. I even sat in the 3rd row seat, (I'm 5'7") and although I'll admit it's a kids seat, it wasn't as bad as I'd have thought it was going to be - yes, leg room is tight and getting there isn't very easy but it was ok .

Good qestion - 20" Bridgestone Dueller 275/45 - 110Y. Same tyres front and back.

1) Have you checked your tire pressure? Proper inflation pressure is marked on the sticker typically found on/near the driver's door jamb (US) . If it's too high, that may not only lead to premature wear of your tires but also make the ride more bouncy/jarring.

2) Compared to the OEM 19 and 18" sizes, you are running on 1/3" (8.6mm) and 2/3" (16.5mm) LESS sidewall height, respectively, that will also reduce ride comfort

3) Your 'Y' rated tires will also likely have a stiffer sidewall compared to the H rated tires found on the 19s and 18 inch size.

I'm not sure that there's a whole lot you can do except to reduce tire pressure (if set too high), switch to a different tire or downgrade to 19s or 18s.

Thanks for the feedback. I do realise that the lower profile tyres will reduce the ride comfort a bit, but I would not have bargained on it being so much! Also only in the rear seats? - the front ones are totally comfortable and normal.

Perhaps I can also point out that this happens at low speed - even < 50 km/h - I have had the wheel balancing checked and that is perfect too.

The tyre pressure is correct at 2.4 bar all round.

The Bridgestoen tyres are the ones the vehicle was fitted with when it arried so I assume these are OEM tyres too.

My point is that the ride is so uncomfortably bumpy that I cannot believe this to be normal! Is there anyone out there who has a similar config as mine that is (or is not) experiencing the same thing. My first instinct was that there was a problem with the active suspension but need confirmation.
