View Full Version : K24 vs K26 turbo

I have in my urq a MC motor using the stock urq ECU. (Pathetic crossbreed, but came that way.)

UNtil the boost gets going,it's a dog. Once boost is there, it's awsome, and never seems to run out of boost (hits the rev limiter first).

On the other hand, Looking at a friend's volvo, it has a tiny (by comparison to the K26) turbo. He says it winds up almost instantly (But he says can tell when it runs out of poop too).

So my question is, all things being equal (in otherwords, nothing else changed), what could one expect to notice if swaping from a K26 to a K24 turbo, on a MC motor?

I'd be willing to give up a *bit* of top end boost, for a quicker response. Would a simple change form a K26 to K24 do it? Any experiences?

Thanks,

what's your intake and exhaust like?

and what are your purposes for your car?

I have the K24 on an MC motor installed in my 84 4KQ. There is no perceptible turbo lag. I have the boost limit set at 10 psi as I have 8.8:1 compression pistons. I'm very pleased with the setup, but if someone wants 20+ psi boost I understand the K26 is a better solution, however you get the lag with that turbo.

Intake and exhaust, CIS & ECU are stock urq, with a MC 1 motor (block, head & turbo).

No track use, just normal 'spirited road use'.

That's where lower boost threshold is more important than top end power..

So if I just did a straight swap of a K26 for a K24, and left everything else the same, is that what I'd get?

I'd definetly be going for a k24. you'll love it. 18psi at 23-2400rpm. get a free flowin exhaut behind it and as open of an intake as you can. also see about some kind of a manual boost controller, or making sure the stock control items are functioning properly to keep that wastegate clamped shut till boost is reached.

do you have a chip & wg spring?

But plan is:

1) Sort out rod knock problem
2) Swap urq ecu for MC ecu & harness(for more agressive maps, ECU controlled boost control & Knock sensing)

3) Change fueling to EFI (Megasquirt), keeping MC ecu for everything else (Ign & Boost)

Then, when all the above is sorted:
4a) Start on improving boost (via Spring/chip/controller)
4b) Start Looking for K24 turbo

Sound sensible?
