OK, so I just purchased a 85 4kq with turbo swap. I'm attending to a few issues before I get it on the road.
First issue is the passenger side motor mount. I replaced it last night and inspected the old one, seems that it collapsed due to heat from the turbo. Is there a simple way to sheild this thing? I remember reading something about HVAC duct insulation? Is this the stuff to use?
Next, I rewired the 3 wires to the starter and the one to the oil temp sender, all were in rough shape due to heat and corrosion. In doing so and moving stuff around I must have pulled the wires out of the connector that goes to the throttle switches. There are three wires and I don't know which goes to which. Is there a way to describe how to rewire this thing. The wires pulled from the harness side, not the switch side. It looks as if this connector was poorly rigged, spliced, from the engine installer.

Any help would be appreciated.

They recommend a piece of metal (such as the HVAC insulation) to cover the mount. Not sure about the wiring.

The shield is a fairly elaborately bent and fabricated piece of sheet metal, about 20 gauge thick.

In an attempt to keep the turbo's heat away from the passenger side engine mount, I've covered my car's shield on the turbo side with self adhesive heat shield that's about 1/8 inch thick. That seems like a cleaner option, even if it needed slight modification.

Mine is held to my 5000CSTQ's framerail by one #2 Phillips head and two 8mm head sheet metal screws. It hides the engine mount from view from the top. It's a bear to remove -- in fact, while replacing the engine mount recently, I just slid the shield out of the way while the motor was jacked up from below by an inch or two. I didn't try to remove it.

Not sure how I'd remove it in a junkyard, come to think of it . . . except by removing the bottom two nuts (15mm socket or wrench) on the engine mount (an oil cooler line may interfere -- use an open-end 27mm wrench on the oil filter adapter to move the hose out of the way and maybe remove the bottom nuts on the right engine mount also), then jacking up the engine as much as possible. Then you'd need to remove all the intake bits to unscrew it from the top. Once you expose the turbo to view you'll see that the shield is just beneath it and hides the engine mount from view. Seems like a lot of work in a junkyard for a lousy piece of tin.

Maybe it's worth asking an Audi dealer for a price on a new one (while sitting down).

On 5000 turbos there's a small (approx 1 inch dia) air duct from the grille that blows forced air from the grille directly unto the passenger side engine mount.

I is difficult enough to get to the top nut on the motor mount as it is. A heat shield definately won't make it any easier. Maybe I'll just pick up some of that adhesive stuff.
