We just did a side exhaust on my eS2, but I think it's probably too close to the rear tire. Oops, measure twice, cut once. Anyway, how far off is your exhaust tip from your tire? Any photos of your car from the side? I already checked your site. Any other advice or recommendations? Thanks!

Hopefully in the coming spring/summer we'll all have a chance to get the 90q20vt and some of the cars Eckert Motorsports is converting plus customer cars out to some of the bigger shows around East. Hopefully will make it to Nationals next year as well with the 90 and other fun toys!

I didn't have plans to do that, but I will if it isn't too difficult. The upper portion of my 3" downpipe is from the Bufkin car. The rest was fabricated out of 3" mandrel bent steel by Ken Fluhr. Downpipe goes to a Magnaflow cat, then to a flex pipe, then back to the bend towards the side of the car and finally to the resonator, which came from an early version of a Stromung exhaust system for an UrS4. The resonator was deemed too loud for that system, so it was cut-out and replaced with a proper muffler. But, it cuts the noise "just enough" for the eS2 race car.

I'll snap some photos tonight and measure the distance of the tip from the tire. It isn't so much the distance as it is that the tip is pointed towards the tread of the tire (we hadn't extended the tip far enough). It's all fixable with a little effort.

Thanks, Jim.

Basically, the car has been together for awhile, but I haven't been able to drive it because it didn't have an exhaust. I learned a long time ago there is a difference between good attention and bad attention, and I didn't want to draw attention to myself in my small, quiet neighborhood. The noises coming from the garage at all hours of the night probably already have them suspicious of me.

Anyway, we got the exhaust installed a few weeks ago, but I still couldn't really drive the car for administrative reasons (insurance, registration, inspection). Well, I finally got insurance, so I ventured out just beyond my neighborhood and found a short stretch to finally get into the boost. I only did one run and the car behaved fine. I have my adjustible BPV configured to be a BOV temporarily, but the adjustment is different for each configuration. In other words, as a BPV (as it was set), it is set to the lowest spring pressure, but as a BOV, it should be set according to your max boost pressure. The result was that during my run, the BOV let go at 14 psi or so, far below my max boost pressure. Still, that is correct behavior, so everything looks good so far. I expect to have the car registered this week and inspected no later than next week. The car will go to its first track event on 11/13. I'll keep reporting my progress. Maybe I can get James to film a "startup" clip like you and he did.

Jimmy

I made a pressure tap from an old O2 sensor and some brass fittings. I'm getting 5.5 psi of back pressure right after the turbo at WOT and about 6000 rpms. I thought it's a little high so I started tapping holes in my exhaust. So far I've found that each muffler adds 1psi, and my hollow cat adds .5 psi. Either my DP, or flexjoint are causing 3 psi of back pressure which sucks! More holes are on the way to narrow it down...

as the open K&N filter down at the breather is making a mess, I dribble. I routed the valve cover breather back down to the crank vent and then plopped a K&N filter on it that rests near the engine mounting bracket. It's smell great and dribbles oil onto the oil pan, catch filter is on my list.

I also want to cut or remove those ports off the valve cover and possibly seal them, maybe thread the opening and cork it with a bolt, or if someone can weld that well then two cover all smoothed over to eliminate that pass through.

projects is how everyone does things differently.
It seems no two projects are alike. So, I have
made a "spotter's guide" to my engine bay and the
unique combination of decisions that I made about
my car. In general, it is a full-spec RS2 engine
conversion, except for the exhaust cam (7A) and a
couple of other very minor details. Other
changes are outlined below, going clockwise from
noon in the photo.

1 - Conversion to vacuum-assisted brakes
2 - Tilton brake proportioning valve
3 - Conversion to hood prop
4 - Crankcase vent oil catch can (Home Depot style, made from paint can)
5 - Hood pins
6 - Dialynx aluminum radiator
7 - Custom aluminum brace and radiator support
8 - Aux radiator replaced with Mercedes oil cooler
9 - Cone filter
10 - Battery relocation
11 - POS relocation and heat sink mod

There is other stuff you can't see in the photo,
but a full walkthrough will come later. Especially
after I have cleaned it up a bit. Sorry about the

Pretty much have 3 vacuum guages. tap gauge #1 right at the downpipe, tap gauge #2 right after the cat. convertor, and tap gauge #3 right before the muffler. so gauge #1 indicates total tailpipe back pressure. #2 indicates back pressure caused by the pipe and muffler. #3 indicates back pressure caused by the muffler. #1 minus #2 is pressure loss across the cat. convertor. #2 minus #3 is pressure loss through the pipe. that should show you where your bottle necks are at.

if you rally you might have some issues with the exhaust hanging below the trans tunnel and driveshaft. It way down there and prevents bolting up a rear skid plate and even a front skid plate.

I don't think you have any backpressure issues to worry about. little extra backpressure=little bit of extra torque=little bit less HP.

selfproclaimedv8buff
10-28-2004, 05:25 AM
funny that you mention that b/c i remember seeing somewhere that some of the colorado guys wanted to test the stock exhaust on the UrS4 so they ran a dyno with the car on stock exhaust and then took the took the whole exhaust out. ran it straight out of the downpipe. they found that torque was down by 15ft/lb and that HP was up by 3. Thats intersting. A turbo in fact creates torque and the absence of back pressure on the turbine should have that turbo free wheelin. then why was there a loss in torque?!

The only reason I would not want it that close is the risk of running over something and having it put the exhaust into the tire. You never know when you'll be greated by a piece of re-tread because the SUV in front of you is so F'n huge and you can't see around them.... As long as it's braced well, I'm sure it will be fine.

fusilier
10-28-2004, 06:15 AM
The way I understand it.
If you think of a motor as an air pump, the stroke and piston area stay the same. So to increase torque at a given RPM you have to increase the pressure in the pump. Increasing fOrce increases torque.

Since there is a ratio between the IM pressure and the EM pressure for the engine. Increasing the EM pressure will have a proportional increase in IM pressure (unless you get compressor surge). Its proportional, not linear. Higher pressures mean higher temperatures. Since the ratio isn't 1:1 then increasing one brings about a larger increase in the other. Surge won't happen on an RS2 if you bottleneck the exhaust, Revs will happen slower, but boost will build and torque comes sooner and harder. Increase in IM pressure means more boost at a lower RPM. Hence more torque. The turbo is working harder to push the air, the EGTs probably rise a bit from the increase in pressure, the increased exhaust volume works the turbo harder but also make the air harder to expel. Its a cycle. Overall airflow in CFM will be less at high RPM because the EM backpressure is higher.

Look at Diesel motors and their Compression ratios. Why do Diesels make so much torque. Why turbo motors make so much torque. Why turbines make more HP than torque. Why do motors with alot of torque tend not to rev freely or to high RPMs.

This technique was used in WRC to create motors with 300hp and 450 lb/ft torque. Torque being unrestricted, while hp was limited to 300.

I'm ranting a bit and its early in the morning. Hope I didn't make a typo.

Thanks for the comments, guys!

I agree that it hangs a little low, but for a tarmac track car, it's way fine. On the street it might be a little dicey, but this car shouldn't see too much street time. If I rally, it is way low, but a) my car is lowered, which it won't be for rally, and b) if I rally, I will modify at least the rear of the exhaust so that at the point it goes perpendicular to the line of travel (most likely to get torn up or off), I will raise the exhaust and have it exit through the body. You can see that I have plenty of room in the back for that. I wanted to do that in the first place, but we didn't really have time. This exhaust was made all in one evening (not counting the downpipe). Thanks, Ken!

I'm not too worried about backpressure. I just have an RS2 turbo (not one of the big pumpers) and this is a full 3" exhaust from about 4" from the turbo. There are three bends in the entire exhaust, two in the downpipe and the one in the rear. Still, thanks for the tips on measuring backpressure losses.
