In early 2006, I purchased a used a 2002 A6 4.2 with 30.000 miles on the clock. This is Certified Car, with Audi's warrantee. During the following months of driving both my wife (it's her car really) and I would occasionally experience phenomenon where the car would not accelerate as normal. This situation can be described in the following manner: When depressing the accelerator say 1/3 throttle, from either a full stop, or rolling slowly (under 5 MPH) the cars acceleration is a fraction of normal, perhaps only 50% of normal power output. Additional, when this occurs, the engine will rev much higher (sounding somewhat strained) to shift in the mid to high 4000 RPM range (normal shifts occur in the low to mid 3000 RPM range), and the shift quality is a bit jerky too. Engine temperature does not seem to be a factor, as it may occurred within a few minutes of start-up, or after a 3 hour highway drive.
To me it seems as though the electronic throttle is just not opening enough, regardless of accelerator position.
I've had the car back to the Audi Dealer about six times to have this corrected. The service techs have run full diagnostics, but the only thing that was ever found was error code for the MAS, and the meter was replaced. Unfortunately, this condition can never seem to be duplicated when they drive the car, or on the numerous test drives that I've made with the Service Manager. Ironically, on two occasions I've actually experienced this hesitation as I was pulling out of the dealer onto the frontage road after the service work was performed (gremlins I guess), and of course it could not be duplicated when I would return to the dealer moments later.
I had arranged for one of Audi's Area Service Representatives to come and take a look at the car, but unfortunately I had to leave to country for a work assignment in Qatar in December of 2006, and was not able to conclude this effort. When I return home this September I will resume my quest to get this resolved.
I am posting here in hopes that perhaps someone else may have heard of this, or even experienced a similar condition. Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
