I'm trying to get a solid grasp on the overall reliability of the 4.2 engine. I know that the W8 engine used in the Passat is a nightmare to work on. A number of repairs require removal of the engine.
Is this so with the 4.2? Or is it easier to work on?<ul><li><a href="http://lifewithdogs.blogspot.com/">dogblog</a></li></ul>

I find working on my A8s 4.2 quite easy compaired to lots of other engines I have worked on.
Try replacing the rotor cap in a V8 jeep some time!
As for the A6 not sure about under hood room.
Now parts cost, thats a different story.

And its very easy to work on! 8 hours to change a spark plugs for my buddy on his Infinty Q45, I just laughed back at him.

I bought my 01 one year ago with 70,000 miles. Within 6 months the thermostat suddenly (and without warning) stuck closed, causing the engine to overheat. Of course its behind the timing belt so I had "everything" done by my favorite indie for $1400 (aftermarket thermostat: I figure if the official Audi thermo's stick you'd be better off with another brand!) The transmission works PERFECTLY, so I did the fluid and filter change and it STILL works perfectly. I recoded it to 0032 (it's a legitimate Audi option and transforms the operation of the trans). A few months later it developed the predictable coolant leak at the oil cooler on the right side (oil filter/cooler) of the lower engine block. It's a $3.00 piece of plastic tubing that requires removal of the bumper to get to ($500-). The rear window shade has recently stopped retracting competely. Having experienced all that, I have to say that those are THE weaknesses of the 4.2, and that this car is the most interesting, enjoyable and all-around awesome car I have ever owned (30+ cars and counting). Just go ahead and do the thermostat and water pump while you are paying for the timing belt AND, LISTEN TO ME HERE!!!While the front bumper is in service position, REPLACE THE PLASTIC COOLANT TUBE/O-rings ON RIGHT SIDE OF THE BLOCK AND YOU'LL BE GOOD FOR THE NEXT 60,000 MILES. Do the trans fluid any other time as a totally separate project, and don't ever look back!! Any questions? +++The 4.2 towers large !!!!
