just recently accquired a beautiful 2002 A6 2.7 with a 6 spd. manual transmission and i'm never one to leave well enough alone. Any experts out there have any recomendations as to what i can/should do to make my daily driver save me some time on my commute to and from work?

cleaner through it, check for boost leaks, clear all codes, check/change all the fluids, change the timing belt and related equipment and replace as necessary.

After that, may I suggest an ECU upgrade from APR/GIAC/ASP and a catback exhaust from Borla/Neuspeed/ASP/AWE/APR/etc.

After that, well, that's enough for now, isn't it...?
